I totally want to garden now. I've never had that urge before.

Seeds have a majesty all their own. Gardening helped me through some of my depression. It was something positive to look forward to, and it was mine. It was just between me and nature.

I smiled when I saw the first seed he planted in this video, and remember seeing seeds that looked like that. Mine were "Red Runner Bean Vine" - a vine plant that produced edible beans that came from very ornamental red flowers.

If you take up gardening, don't follow the instructions on the back of the seed packs. Those will make you waste more seeds. (Unless the seeds are very small or like spores anyway)

This alone will put you ahead a couple years:

Some other things to consider are keeping a journal, and trying out lots of different things in lots of different places in the beginning. You'll find out what works and what doesn't along the way, and your results can surprise you. Some factors aren't obvious in the beginning. That, and keep track of shade around where you garden in the different seasons. If you lived in some warmer place like Florida it's like "yeah, sure, you CAN plant in Winter, but the leaves will be coming back and the plants might not be getting all the sun they need."

Talk to old timers who garden. Some times they'll tell you things you just can't find anywhere else because they're the only ones who are local with their level of experience.

Well, someone is going to survive the apocalypse.

Great link, thank you!

I've been to this place and could spend days there. It's fucking fantastic. This guy is awesome.

uH...I thought I gave this 5 stars. I could have sworn I did. I apologize for the mishap...I have no idea how that happened...maybe my finger accidentally clicked it to two or something...this is favorited now to make up for it.

I wasn't going to rate this video, since I really don't care about seeds. But here's 5 stars for the video in your name.

I don't see this as an obsession that should be mocked.
craptacular
yeah, "Obsessives" is a bit of a misnomer.

Chow Obsessives are generally cool. Like Galco's Soda Pop Stop one. "You're Doing It Wrong" are the evil ones.

This is a practice that should be encouraged whenever possible. The results are beautiful, healthy, and delicious!

ah, looks like somebody else recently rediscovered these... one of them popped up on the sidebar a while ago and I've been watching them all

I'll come right out and say it: supermarkets have ruined tomatoes.

I grew up in the suburbs and until a couple of years ago (other than my grandma's gardening) wasn't really exposed to heirloom plants. If you are in the same boat, you really owe it to yourself this summer to start shopping at the closest farmer's market, and get some veggies that are fresh, local, and in season, rather than the tasteless, mealy crap that gets shipped to the supermarket.

You can get heirloom tomatoes in my old neighborhood. I think Trader Joes sells them sometimes, too.
