I think the thingy is a microphone and/or the battery and control device that goes with it. They're made to clip to your belt or fit in a pocket, but when you're wearing a dress I guess the idea is to strap it to your thigh. I suspect they told her that they were tossing the shot to her due to technical difficulty, but didn't give her enough time to plug in or turn it on or whatever.

Or it's a vibrator.
