If you talk to enough religious folk who think this way, you will start to realize that the reason for this upsurge in "you cannot have morals without religion" thing is because they are deeply uncomfortable with subjective morality and the idea that society can change its norms; that's really what it boils down to. In my experience, the quickest way to get a Christians head to explode is to point out that most religious people pick and choose what they want from their religion and ignore everything else even though the Bible (and Jesus) says specifically you're not supposed to do that and the law is the law regardless of where or when. They then have to go through all sorts of mental hoops to justify why it is that they don't follow all sorts of barbaric, bronze age dictates but think that a generic "don't kill people" is the deepest, most complex moral statement their religion can make, even though it's immediately contradicted by a dozen other things. Obviously this kid is too young to understand the complexities of moral philosophy, but yeah...it really is just a pathological need to deny that subjective morality exists and works.
