Video compression technology has made huge advances in the last 25 years, but STILL people insist on posting video clips as enormous, soundless, 256-color GIF animations on 9gag and other picture sites.
1. 9GAG is a pox on the internet.
2. I'm guessing its popularity resurfaced as Tumblr and other image-based blogging sites ascended in popularity. It's probably also harder for content hawks (that is, lawyers) to track them down and issue cease and desists for things like Homer Simpson saying (without audio) "D'OH!"
You really want all those annoying blinkers playing sound? Really?

Up until about two months ago, I've pronounced it "jiff".
You were pronouncing it correctly until about two months ago. "Jiff" is how the creators of the bloody format say it should be pronounced:
Jet Bin Fever
yeah, I'm used to saying "giff" like gift without the T at the end. But who cares, right?
The person who corrected me cared :'|
could be worse, a friend of mine's dad pronounced ASCII as "ay-shee"
(lack of stars because they could have used some better GIFs)
