Also, he mispronounces "tau"
|
Old_Zircon - 2012-06-28 Yes, I know, the greek letter is pronounced that way, but the tau/tau visual pun relies on the mispronunciation of the other tao and oh god just kill me)

tldw.. Can someone explain why is this an issue? pi is a ratio so does it matter if pi or tau or something half as big or 4 times is used?

MrBuddy - 2012-07-04 Pi makes math harder, tau makes math easier, but we use pi because that's what we've always done.
It's like the QWERTY keyboard. We keep using the same keyboard layout because that's what we've always done. Never mind that the reason we have this keyboard layout is to literally slow down typing for the sake of typewriters (that haven't been made in decades).

eh six of one, a dozen of the other
more importantly, at math departments all over north america, pi day is an excuse to bake and eat pies.
what do you give us, tau?

I have no idea if he's right or not, but his presentation is infuriatingly brony-esque.

Mathematician weighing in.
I've watched the first 10 minutes and I'm going to assume the last 40 offers no new insights beyond "Why is Pi based on diameter but all our formulas use radius!!?? That's dumb!". I guess everybody needs a cause to fight for, but I just can't get worked up over this one.
I've seen similar arguments about why duodecimal (base 12) would be a much superior number system to use over decimal since 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 evenly divide into 12. That also makes some sense, but I just think it would be awkward having to tape extra fingers on children to help teach them to count.

Old_Zircon - 2012-06-28 I've got to give him credit, it looks like it makes wave functions much, much easier for a beginner. Which, as someone who's not bad at math but finds it dull, I can appreciate, since it would help me with building speakers.

Oscar Wildcat - 2012-06-28 Base 12 makes a lot more sense for your unit measure than a counting system. Yea craftsman of olde would take his foot measure and could just as easily divide the work by two as by three. Precisely, to within the tolerance of the measuring stick. Try this with a base 10 system of measure, like metric.
|
Old_Zircon - 2012-06-29 I've been building guitars this summer and base 12 does, indeed, rule. No pun intended.

I had enough when he declared he 'hacked geek culture'.
I'm all about exploring new ideas about mathematics and science, but dude... shut the fuck up. You're so boring. No wonder you're a mathematician.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2012-06-29 Yeah, no one has been enough of a big fucking attention seeking whiner to make a big crusade out of this yet... and then I came along!

The word "sophomoric" still works, right?
