Since the "plan" was to use these to shoot down Soviet strategic bombers over Europe and northern Canada, it's at least somewhat nice to see Americans testing it on themselves first.

MacGyver Style Bomb - 2012-07-21

For comparison's sake, Little Boy was in the 16 KT range and was detonated at 1900 feet.

Oh, and keyboard warriors ahoy in the YouTube comments.

The intro to the video is a little off. The bomb (Operation: Plumbbob's John test) detonated between 18,000 and 20,000 feet above sea level. I'm not sure how high the Nevada Test Site is. The yield was less than 2 kilotons, at 1.5 kilotons or one tenth the size of the Hiroshima bomb. I suppose you could call were they were standing Ground Zero, but it would be more honest if you mentioned the bomb detonated at least two miles away (if you count up as being away). The guys you see in the video got no significant dose of gamma or neutron radiation. The idea was they were going to show that atomic bombs were safe to use above cities. They didn't mention the radioactive fallout which drifted down long after those guys had left.

Edward Gorey the cartoonist was actually stationed nearby on a purely clerical position, filing stuff. He gave an interview toward the end of his life about how the next day, all the wild sheep in the area were dead, and the "non-essential personnel" (such as himself) were ordered to go clean them up so they could be burnt.

Only 5 people (to our knowledge) have experienced this. That's fewer people than have been on the moon. I bet these guys had some wild stories to share and had some intense friendships.
