Why do we still trip over ourselves to talk respectfully to these morons?
dead_cat
Because they have delicate feelings.

i know a lot has been said already about the ghastly james carville and his cadaverous appearance but fuck man i keep trying to focus on the audio of this only to literally recoil every time he is shown. it's so jarring, like a dracula killed some kid from the early 80's and stole his outfit and is sitting right there and no one seems to notice! look out neil!
Cena_mark
That's one of Chris Chan's hand me downs.

SteamPoweredKleenex
I'd say that was a Chris Chan reject. Chris seems to go for the same shirts as Sesame Street's Ernie. The one James has on is from "That 70's Show," I think.

kingarthur
Carville inhabits New Orleans and those same shirts are usually sold to tourists as Mardi Gras festive attire. They're cheap and horrible.

takewithfood
He probably lost a bet with Tyson.

Colonel Cowlung
I watched The War Room recently, and Carville was wearing the same shirt during Clinton's run for President.

There was some terrible fashion on display in that documentary.

Hooker
Lutz drove GM into the ground, so we should certainly listen to him about climate change.

Real Time is just about the worst show.
Xenocide
To be fair, Real Time isn't the only show that engages in the idiotic "we're obligated to give equal time to the people who think the world is flat" fallacy.

I would love to see just one cable news show have the balls to start the show with a statement like the following:

"For tonight's show we were going to have a climate debate. So we decided to get a reputable scientist who believes in climate change, and here he is. Then we decided to get a reputable scientist who doesn't believe in climate change, but we couldn't find one. Anywhere. Just kooks, shills, and idiots with mail order degrees. Now, we could have filled the gap with some random oil company spokesman, a former GM executive, or my dog, any of which would be equally qualified to speak on the subject. But we're not going to insult your intelligence like that. So my guests tonight are Niel DeGrasse Tyson and this empty chair.

"As you can see, it's a very nice chair. It even spins!"

Blue
Were you even watching that debate? Tyson was completely stumped by that chair!

SteamPoweredKleenex
"Real Time" doesn't care about equal time. They want some actual verbal fisticuffs with the occasional snarky one-liner. I don't care for the format because Bill Maher just talks over everyone.

I've said it before. He needs to study how Jon Stewart artfully lets the wingnuts keep talking, spinning the rope that they eventually hang themselves from. Maher mostly comes off as a bully, and he's still hard to take seriously given his anti-vax and woo-woo medicine opinions.

fatatty
I think they get some interesting conversations going on, and Maher is at least willing to call conservatives on their bullshit. He does interrupt too much but I still think he's generally polite and lets most people say what they want to say. I like that he tries to make an entertaining panel politics show, but Stewart would do it much better.

Modern Angel
haha yes, more people need to be like jon "can't we all just get along america is a road with a tunnel" stewart.

Pompoulus
This is a man of peace. He clearly didn't want to fight but there's a bandit in the road.
urbanelf
Oh. A bet with nothing on the line. My favorite kind.

4:09 into the video Tyson proposes that Lutz and all the global warming deniers should invest in companies that would profit from no real climate change, to put their money where their mouth is. If climate change is real, which most scientists have agreed is, they'll all go broke.

Toenails
Really though. This isn't funny.
Rodents of Unusual Size
Lutz should be a curse word synonymous with dog shit.
Riskbreaker
Exactly what does the conservative right wing movement gains from all these global warming denying?
Vaidency
It is their opinion that it would be expensive to do anything about global warming if it were happening, so therefore it is not happening.

They're basically attempting to rearrange reality into a more convenient configuration by sheer force of will.

In more recent years it's also become part of the great left-vs-right pissing contest that defines American politics, and climate science is an issue that's been claimed by the left. Now conservatives are obligated to reject it because to do otherwise would be to betray the conservative movement, and they'd rather be wrong than disloyal.

MONKEY

i meant money, but still throw some poo

fourthguy
Global warming is an uncomfortable notion, and conservatives generally prefer comforting lies to discomforting truths. Denial of evolution, denial of death, denial of economic unfairness, denial of racism, etc. Deny deny deny. It's their whole thing. The American right lives in a world where the truth is whatever you want it to be - their mindset is driven by fear rather than reason.

Accepting the reality of global warming also hurts oil and car companies. Like, say, GM for example.

spikestoyiu
They don't want to admit that hippies were right about something.

jangbones
All large corporations will suffer if held accountable for their contributions to global warming.

Its all about money.

Syd Midnight
In the 20th century the issue was "pollution", and it's the same interested parties, and their followers, who used to fight against environmental regulations back when the stakes were "may hurt people" instead of "may kill everything".

So the brains of the conservative right wing (wealthy gains tremendously by convincing their rank-and-file vote against their own self-interest because the ethyl lead industry creates jobs, unions are communist, damn tree hugging liberals, Jesus will save us etc.

A smart conservative Republican is a rich Libertarian who actually understands human nature.

Riskbreaker
I'm sure every conservative is promised a monkey butler if they support this bs.

American Standard
ugh.
Nikon
That old fossil needs to go extinct.
baleen
Of course he grew up in Scarsdale.
