This seems like an awful lot of effort to go through for something that the kid will outgrow in 6 months. The kid already looks like he pretty much fills the drivers seat completely already.
The person that made this clearly doesn't think in those terms. When the kid grows out of it, he will gladly move on to his next productive effort. Which will probably be something awesome as well, like a soap box car with a suspended chassis or another thing that I am kind of making up as I go.
Given the level of skill in evidence and the shop, the dad could see making the vehicle large as a challenge.
Or hey, he might just recycle it.
Sometimes things are done for "fun." You're doing the equivalent of noting that it's a lot of trouble to make a fairly elaborate meal or dessert if it's just going to get eaten.
