I've actually had this thought about World of Warcraft... being sentient brings with it immortality, but not being sentient brings with it the chance to actually be responsible for things. If you're a PC, you can save the world 90 times over without so much as a word of thanks from the world at large, but the credit in the cutscene inevitably goes to the NPC Bigshot.
