It's worse.

It was made at the tail end of the bluescreen-CGI handover, and it shows. It was as if the moviemakers didn't care for doing either well.

Not to mention the plot was awful and had some weird leaps of logic (the Shadow has guns that can blow holes in concrete, but when he's in a giant tank with porthole-windows, he tries to smash the glass with his elbow and then shrugs his guns off into the rising water). It's too bad, since they had a halfway decent cast and could have made a fun semi-supernatural noir movie.

Hey, I think the Rocketeer is pretty awesome. I know it was a flop, but the special effects and the atmosphere of the film are really cool.

What was cool about the Rocketeer was the teaser trailer that made it look really heroic, bad-ass, and made me want to build my own jetpack.

Then it turned out to be pretty live-action Disney watered-down with a club in the shape of a bulldog. There were some neat visuals, but it didn't live up to its potential.

Rocketeer was fun in a dumb way. The Shadow was just dumb. Sometimes movies based on old radio plays just don't work.

Although many Shadow purists hated it, I loved the updated Shadow from the Howard Chaykin miniseries from the 80's, as well as the short-lived monthly with art by Bill Sienkiewicz and Kyle Baker. I'm reserving judgement about the Garth Ennis-helmed series from Dynamite.

No Shadow, no Batman. The first year of the Batman comics didn't have Gotham City at all, Bruce Wayne was a Lamont Cranston type world-traveling millionaire. Then Christopher Nolan came and plagiarized the "secrets learned from Tibetan monks" thing part and parcel.

I guess no Darkwing Duck, either.
