He used to be a really great guy. He still is, in many ways. There isn't anything he wouldn't do for a friend, even a liberal lefty friend like me.

Things started going wrong when he lost his job about ten years ago. He was poised to become manager for a retail chain store when he was unceremoniously let go for some trumped-up bullshit reason. A lot of other people in the chain who had been hired around the same time period as he was were also being let go. It was all to do with benefits they were becoming eligible for. He had worked hard and performed well, but it was cheaper to fire and replace him with a more recent hire who was more than eager to take the job.

You would think someone going through that would become seriously anti-corporate and lean more to the left, but he had the opposite reaction. Mexican immigrants seemed to be the main target of his wrath for a while. At first, he was annoyed that government forms had to be printed bilingually to accommodate non-English speakers. Then it got to the point that he thought the border between the US and Mexico should be made a kill zone where every man, woman and child trying to cross it would be shot and killed on sight.

Since Obama bailed out the auto industry, though, union workers have been his nemeses. According to him, they rake in huge salaries and only have to screw in one bolt a day, but only if they feel like it.

I think his biggest problem is that he was on track to enjoy the life his parents and their parents before him enjoyed. Then, through no fault of his own, it was all yanked away. His marriage suffered, but, thankfully, seems to be recovering now. He almost lost his house and still could if he or his wife lose their current jobs. He followed the rules, worked hard and did everything the powers that be told him he was supposed to do and his life still got fucked up by outside forces. He's been suffering from a kind of post-traumatic stress disorder. He's frightened, angry and needs someone to blame.

I guess it could have been worse. At least he didn't join a white supremacist group or something.

The only sane response to what happened to him would be to become viciously pro-union to the exclusion of all other concerns, I would think. There are many reasons for the completely tolerated illegal immigration that we've had in the last decades, for good and bad, but the business-right's reason was clearly for cheap labor. How do you blame poor immigrants before you blame fat cats and union-busting, or the company that fired you, etc etc??
