space IS the place. some stock characters, but this looks good.

very realistic, especially the part about their budget being a joke

This is actually one of the smartest and best researched sci fi TV shows I've ever seen. Not just by anime standards, either.

And what's great about it is that it doesn't sacrifice realism for entertainment value. The show is fun as hell, and almost all of it feels like something that could actually happen in the next 20 years or so.

Giving it ***.

The reviews/descrips I saw for this said it was "hard science fiction." Except, I don't see much hard yet, as it starts with one cool scene and then launches into the saga of how a clueless idiot loli talks to other anime caricatures the whooole time that sloowly, stuff happens in space.

But I'll watch it anyway. sigh.
SolRo - 2012-11-26
It's mostly light-hearted but it deals with reality throughout, with some fairly dark concepts in the last 1/3rd of the series.

FYI, reviews are done for the whole work, saying the first episodes dont match reviews is idiotic.

animu.

SolRo - 2012-11-26
If i had front page rights i'd post some animu just to punish you.

haha eat my star and weep

SolRo - 2012-11-26
Just to burst your bubble, but I don't submit these hoping for a perfect 5 star rating. It's more to expose people with an open mind to interesting and enjoyable anime they might have not seen.

I'm under no delusion that I'll somehow convert trolls or people with generic anime rage.

U mad bro?

I might give this a shot, but that trailer looks fucking terrible, no matter what the other description is.

Wonko the Sane - 2012-11-26
Huh, this looks like I might actually enjoy an anime.

1:24 Oh right, it's an anime.
Cena_mark - 2012-11-26
WHOA!!! HOLD UP THERE WONKIE HUSSEIN! You'll give Anime 2 stars, but one star all the wrestling videos? WHAT THE FUCK!

Cena_mark - 2012-11-26
I like Red Dwarf and this is clearly inspired by it.

I read the description and then saw it was an anime and thought SolRo was trolling. While there are some gross technical problems in the science (present day next gen inflatable capsules will make explosive decompression unheard of from small punctures and that shuttle had plenty of time to move if you had time to make a hero speech). While it was nice to hear the familiar four doing voices again, it's still an anime, so at best it's about the characters and never the plot. The characters seem kind of stock.

There's a bunch of boring one-off episodes at the beginning, but it's a pretty good show once it gets going. Too bad the director never went on to make anything but crap like Code Geass.

Also, the Planetes comic is great.
Simillion - 2012-11-27
I'll get to them, for sure. I like the near-future sci-fi genre too much not to. But the tropes and stock chars will make it hard, and that means watching it gets backlogged.

SolRo - 2012-11-28
The charecters change through the series in meaningful ways, one of the best redeeming qualities of good anime. Downside is first impressions turn people off too quickly.
