The GOP isn't interested in facts and reality. Neither is Ron Paul in terms of his extreme libertarianism. However, I'm willing to give him credit that he's probably right about this point.

The crazy thing Ron Paul is doing is hoping that the GOP would actually pay attention to reality.

Ron Paul is a person with integrity and dumb ideas. He can't say things he knows or feels aren't true the way most politicians gleefully can. His problem is dumb ideas, not lying.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-01-06

I could almost believe that if it weren't for the whole "States Rights" bullshit he spews. Anyone who doesn't know that was and is the fig leaf used by racists and bigots to justify whichever minority or behavior they want to pass laws against is either a liar or an idiot.

wackyakmed - 2013-01-06

It really depends on the era. I just finished an interesting (to me at least?) book on the conflict between populist and elitist financing during the American revolution. The populists lined up behind states' rights, mainly because the elites had maneuvered to make sure that federal law would favor them. "Founding Finance" by William Hogeland. Check it out.

My point is that there's nothing inherently more egalitarian about federalist policy, and in fact the ongoing bailout fiasco could serve as a cautionary tale concerning the effects of concentrating power if it isn't accountable to broad swathes of the population.

FABIO - 2013-01-06

If only we hadn't concentrated power in the federal government those depressions wouldn't have been so bad? What?

wackyakmed - 2013-01-07

That's exactly what I said.

Stopheles - 2013-01-06

"American exceptionalism" and "opportunity around the world" are mutually exclusive concepts.

Old_Zircon - 2013-01-06

The way the term "American exceptionalism" is used today is so straight up Orwellian it's hard to believe. It literally means the opposite of what it meant when it was coined now.

Pretty spot on. And he actually did a good job of arguing against the "they hate us because of our freedoms" bullshit. Robert Fisk also talks about Bin Laden's reasons as well and he interviewed Bin Laden a couple of times, that's worth a look if you're interested.

I can't tell if that look on Rick Santorum's face is because of his ignorance to what Ron Paul is saying, because he's never heard anyone criticize the US government's policies in such a way, or because he's aware of what Ron Paul is saying but also aware that he's not supposed to say things like that. The audience is what really gets to me though.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2013-01-06

It's because he's got a boner, both for America, the troops, and Ron Paul. Santorum is that gay.

Void 71 - 2013-01-06

If forced to choose at gunpoint, I'd go with Ron Paul's extreme libertarianism over his son's blatant neoconservatism.

Void 71 - 2013-01-06

This was in reply to the first post.

Chocolate Jesus - 2013-01-06

The moment you boneheads give Ron Paul an ounce of good will he's gonna destroy it with something like this:

/watch?v=gB3pjft_Aus

He is just as much an accomplice to the GOP madness as any of his colleagues -- if you saw him during the last election cycle (after the first couple debates) then you might have seen him in full shill-mode.

I have more respect for repellent assholes like Newt Gingrich, who at least are nakedly evil -- and not running a GOP recruitment front group for pot heads, infowarriors, so-called anarcho-capitalists, and paranoid racists.

baleen - 2013-01-06

I think we know that already.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-01-10

Yeah, it's right there in the title.
