I wonder what's going to happen when Fred Phelps dies. I'm sure they'll keep the family funeral protesting business open for a while just because that's their current source of income.
But what happens when a few years pass and the guy that subjugated them isn't there to scream at them all the time? I'm pretty sure some of them would rather be doing something with their lives other than doing the most despicable grift out there this side of fake cancer cures. Will they one by one drop out and become individual human beings, or is it more likely that as adults who have never known anything else they'll keep doing his bidding as best they can?
I hope he becomes an invalid and they all abandon him to die in a fucking nursing home, but I'm sure that's just wishful thinking.
I'm curious what would happen if Fred Phelps got shot. Would they call him a fag and protest his funereal?
No they wouldn't. They're in it for the money. Nobody's going to throw a punch at the Phelps funeral.
From what I understand, a lot of family members have "dropped out" already. The ones who remain are dedicated careerists (particularly Shirley, who seems to be the heir apparent). Once Fred croaks, they'll probably stay doing what they're doing, just a man short.
I get the impression that Fred's daughter Shirley is currently the one really running the show. She seems to be far more active in the protests and media hoopla than the old bastard is.
