Expressed myself twice while watching this, will probably go for a third time after an hour or so.
So is Diplo's thing just choosing different styles of dance music and making mainstream versions of them now? seems like everything I see his name on since Major Lazer is a genre exercise. Not that I'm complaining because he's great at it, but I remember when Diplo just sounded like Diplo.
Diplo never sounded "like Diplo". He got his start mimicking Brazilian funk carioca, IIRC.
Also for NOLA Bounce context: http://vimeo.com/58423297
Huh, the Diplo stuff I first heard was a bunch of mixtapes he did in the early 2000s and I don't remember it sounding much like that, it was more like a blend of grime and chiptunes. What you're saying makes a lot of sense, though, I probably only heard weird side project stuff.
Nah, you're probably right. I first heard him on his demo for M.I.A. "Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1" (incidentally the best thing M.I.A. has ever done) from 2004.
I still get the sense that Diplo's skill lies in scavanging local/ethnic scenes rather than innovation. There's room for that.
White boy travels the world and produces awesome rocking beats with lesser known stars. So far it's been mostly great, I hope he keeps it up. He can produce the occasional shitty Beyonce or No Doubt track as long as he uses the money to do this kind of stuff.

I've been to most of those places in the video. I worked with the NO AIDS task force in NOLA for a few years. I hate that I never once ran into Nicky Da B while I was there. Or maybe I did, and I just didn't know who he was yet.

He's a comer. I don't think he was even rapping before about 18 months ago.
Needs "Ruby Rhod" tag.
I just listened to this like 10 times in a row.
Needs a Nicky Da B tag so it's linked to this.
