I think at some point, people who work in call centers come to genuinely hate the people they're bothering and the goal becomes not to sell products or services, but to bother their victims even more.

"Oh, so you're gonna put yourself on a national 'do not call' list and tell me not to call you? WELL, I'M MOVING TO CANADA, MOTHERFUCKER! I FUCKING HATE CANADA, BUT I WILL MOVE THERE JUST SO I CAN KEEP CALLING YOUR SORRY ASS! I WILL PUT YOUR HOUSE UNDER SURVEILLANCE SO I CAN TIME THE CALLS TO MAXIMIZE THE INCONVENIENCE TO YOU! I WILL NOT BE DENIED!!!"

It's true in a sense. You have to think of telemarketers similarly to a waiter in a restaurant -- they're the ones in control of the situation. If you're rude to them, it's a very small thing for them to disposition your number for a call-back. If you're kind, it's a small thing to let you out of the system entirely.

On more demanding jobs, you can get cussed out twenty times in a day by assholes who all think they're the first ones to do it. That definitely has a Nazi-fying psychological effect that makes you lose all sympathy for the people you're harassing.

Also, if you're getting called about surveys, the DNC list will not help you. When the government put the federal do not call list into effect, it wanted to reserve its own right to call people for the purposes of census-taking. The private sector seized on that exception and lobbied for the same kind of consideration.

Am I a telephone rape apologist?

Meerkat - 2013-02-16

It's very easy to move the receiver from your ear to the hook.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-02-16

That's kind of how a door-to-door newspaper subscription guy treated me. I told him I didn't want the paper, I get my news from other sources, it would just pile up, I didn't need it, etc., all very polite. I really don't get anything out of the paper that I can't get online or from other sources.

He turned away with a bitter "You just don't care about people like me, do you?"

Maru - 2013-02-16

Judging from the histrionics I've witnessed, three times in a week seems to be most people's limit.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-02-16

God, it's horrible about newspapers. I get the calls. My dad is a retired newspaper writer, and I turn them away with a heavy heart, but yeah, who needs the fucking clutter?

ashtar. - 2013-02-16

A job where you learn to hate your fellow man while you harass them. Obviously, telemarketing is the first step on the career path to working as a gangstalking perp.

Hooker - 2013-02-16

Yeah. I'm sure people quit call center jobs due to a lack of interested customers.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2013-02-16

Here's something I've done sometimes.

"I used to work in phone sales, and i know how tough it is. I hope you're having a great day, but i'm going to hang up now."

Click.

i think this guy is full of shit. It would be nice (actually it wouldn't) if you could make someone feel guilty for being bothered just by paying them a little respect, but c'mon! I think he's grasping at straws.

memedumpster - 2013-02-16

Hang on, who still gets live telemarketing phone calls? I get like a trillion BS calls a year, and every one of them is a recording from a number that doesn't exist when you call it back. I got through to an actual human one time on one of these calls by entering in pi to the fifty third place on the automation system, but the rest are completely one sided. They don't want to talk to us either.

The next step in technology is going to be automated secretaries in our phones so machines can screen machine calls for us.

memedumpster - 2013-02-16

Another hilarious thing that happens is that two numbers will call simultaneously so one goes right to my voice mail to spam it while the other spams me live.

I shudder to think how gangstalkees react to these calls.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-02-16

I haven't received a telemarketing call in at least six years, when I last lived in a house with a land line.

I always said "Thanks, but I'm not interested" and if they kept talking anyway (which they often did) I just hung the phone up. I don't understand the point in going out of your way to be extra rude to someone who's just doing their job and cuss them out, threaten them, insult them, etc. It's much easier and less time consuming to just hang up.

This guy sucks and hasn't got a clue if he honestly thinks this will work enough to make a difference.

FABIO - 2013-02-16

They're annoying as hell but quite as annoying as listening to stories of how proud people are that they messed with some telemarketer. Nothing makes me inwardly roll my eyes more at a gathering and slink off at those sad assholes.

It's not even worth answering an unknown number anymore. If it's important they'll leave a voice mail.

FABIO - 2013-02-16

^ not quite as annoying

bopeton - 2013-02-17

Eh? Who wastes their time saying any words at all to telemarketers?

Just hang up immediately as soon as you realize it's some sort of solicitation.

Blue - 2013-02-17

I've never worked in an outbound call center, but I suspect that policy is better for everyone involved.

When I worked in an inbound call center and a customer didn't hang up the phone right, we had a whole routine we had to do just to release the call. I suspect that many telemarketers literally cannot end the call themselves without violating policy.

I suspect that being polite to a telemarketer and trying to explain to them that you don't want the product or service is really just wasting their time. If you want to be polite, hang up.

cognitivedissonance - 2013-02-17

I was a bill collector for about six months. I got a cut of every bill paid, and thus I was actually motivated to harass. We were taught that in no uncertain terms were the laws ever going to be applied in a prosecutorial sense to employees of the firm, and since the firm had an in-house lawyer who argued (when it very rarely came up) that the firm wasn't responsible for the irresponsible acts of it's employees, it was an unenforceable scenario and absolutely nothing would stop us from bullying, destroying lives, embarrassing employees to their employers, et cetera et cetera et cetera.

The most dangerous thing you can be is a salaried employee who has access to skiptracing databases, a six line phone, and no scruples whatsoever.

It was also the only time in my life I was what I'd consider an alcoholic.

Gmork - 2013-02-17

People like that get cancer, so it all evens out.

CrimsonHyperSloth - 2013-02-17

My friend did collection for a bit and it was awful, my girlfriend did plain call centre stuff for awhile as well. Neither of them were excited about those jobs.

I think they were more upset that the only part time work they could get was harassing people who were in their homes to pry money from their hands. There is no dancing about it, it's harassment and at times borderline extortion.

sjohnson301 - 2013-02-17

Why is this under "religious"? Call center 'Objection Czars' are terrible, but even they deserve better than a "religious" tag.

TheQuakeSoldier - 2013-02-17

Ah yes, telemarketing. The transitional phase between the old days of door-to-door sales and the modern age of email spam.

Fuck these people.

paparatti - 2013-02-19

I've worked in a plain old call center before, so I'm just going to five star this based on the title and the screengrab and move the fuck on. I didn't hate the customers, I just hated myself.
