Funniest movie ever.

misterbuns - 2013-03-01

I'm currently cutting a trailer of Holy Mountain as if it were a Judd Apatow comedy.

Ursa_minor - 2013-03-02

I watched this once when I was young and thought it to be an opaque, nonsensical trainwreck. I was furious at the movie. Then a grew a heart, a brain, and a dick and realized it's a hilarious, hyper-creative commentary. Love it now.

Gmork - 2013-03-02

Nice neely reference.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-02

The first time I saw this movie was in an illegal apartment in Green Point that used to be a brothel. Also, was the only person in the room who wasn't robotripping. I love Jodorowsky.

fedex - 2013-03-02

ugh, I never got the appeal of roboing, seriously made me sick

UmbilicalFiend - 2013-03-05

i'm using The Holy Mountain as an excuse to say that I went to prom on tons of robitussin and it was great

misterbuns - 2013-03-05

This film is a comedy just like Keeping up with the Kardashians is a comedy.

Right?

memedumpster - 2013-03-01

All the sets in this movie are gorgeous.

misterbuns - 2013-03-05

i like how you can see yoko ono's money running out at the film goes on.

TheOtherCapnS - 2013-03-01

God, Jodorowski Dune would have been incredible.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-01

I can hardly even imagine. Everything he touched is fantastic.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-01

Plus Dali as the Padishah Emperor.

memedumpster - 2013-03-01

This movie predicted the designer assault rifle.

memedumpster - 2013-03-01

And Arakis as an Orson Welles style carnivore planet going around Counter Reforming the galaxy.

misterbuns - 2013-03-01

haha. more like JoBOREowski, ammirite?

re: dune. Dune doesn't need the wet sloppy kiss of Jodorowski's egoism. He didn't even read the book before writing the script, he just heard the buzzwords 'space' 'messiah' 'hallucinations' and did made everything up.

Dune is a vast, nuanced and important work of science fiction that doesn't need a lunatic with a god-complex rethinking it.

It would have been an incredible spectacle: an military convoy carrying shuttle parts colliding with a circus while pink floyd plays. Interesting? Yes. Dune? No.

ps i like jodorowski a lot. really.

poorwill - 2013-03-01

I don't like Jodorowski a lot, but I think he's ok. I only seen this and El Topo, and they really are pretty boring (when you consider all the crazy shit tossed all over the screen).

misterbuns - 2013-03-01

I guess my point is Jodorowski would have made a joke out of Dune. That's what he does.

He would have taken all the interesting images provided him by the source material, Giger and probably Dali and then crammed in a bunch (very) familiar mystical iconography from his own experience and turned what is a very clear allegory about fossil fuel, environmentalism and a story about the human capacity to adapt into a vague tarot card reading.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-03-02

If there's one thing sci-fi needs it's more po-faced seriousness and less cool entertaining shit that takes advantage of the visual medium.

Louddetective - 2013-03-02

I like Jodorowski quite a bit, but his Dune sounds like an insanely terrible trainwreck. I'm pretty glad it didn't happen, but then again I'm pretty into Dune.

memedumpster - 2013-03-02

Was David Lynch erased from time or something? His version was not less ridiculous.

misterbuns - 2013-03-02

At least david lynch was telling a story that resembled what frank herbert wrote.

at least.

jodorowski's dune would have been nothing like the original work.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-02

Alan Smithee (in the extended TV version of the movie, which I prefer) was telling a story that resembled what Frank Herbert wrote. The Lynch-approved cut is like someone chose one page from each chapter at random and filmed them in order without any kind of continuity.

Great movie, both versions.

misterbuns - 2013-03-05

herbert's dune is a deeply difficult story and world to bring to film so it's no surprise that Lynch's film is a deeply flawed movie.

The Alan Smithee cut is unwatchable. I'd take my name off of it too.

The film is tediously expository, which might have been an effect of the studio and the size of the budget ( Lynch has never directed a film that was so expository) larger budged scifi things that are supposed to compete with Star Wars need to make sense and Dune's way of making sense is to literally tell the audience what is occuring onscreen and literally tell the audience what characters are thinking. Its lazy and alienating storytelling. It literally stops scenes dead in their tracks.

Any love I have for Lynch's dune is a hangover from adolescence (although the movie was almost twenty years old by the time i saw it) and my love for Frank Herbert. I also love David Lynch but that love is in no way sourced from his attempt at Dune.

BHWW - 2013-03-23

That's what got to me about Lynch's Dune, the close-ups of people putting on their "He never has a second cup of coffee at home!" THINKING faces accompanied by their thoughts being voiced.

misterbuns - 2013-03-01

^^ Santa Sangre is the best, I believe.

fedex - 2013-03-01

my faves are Holy Mountain, Santa Sangre, and El Topo in that order

memedumpster - 2013-03-02

Sante Sangre is awesome and had the hardest impact on me. It's a good movie to show Jodorowski virgins before the movies with rivers of blood and piles of dead animals.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-03-02

Same. Santa Sangre followed by El Topo. Santa Sangre is the first I saw.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-02

I love Santa Sangre. One of my peak cinema experiences was my whole band driving 50 miles to see a midnight screening of it after practice in the late 90s. There were only half a dozen other people in the theater, and two of them spent the whole movie making out.

Caminante Nocturno - 2013-03-02

Hmmmm.

kingarthur - 2013-03-03

I love this movie. I love this man's movies. I love this man.
