IF ONLY.

The projection of the fantasies the Tea Party has if it were in power continues.

This is of course absurd, but I do sort of agree with (shudder) Rand Paul et al. about the completely bizarre and frightening idea that we can just assassinate people the executive branch considers bad. Stopping shit like that was one of the main reasons I voted for Obama, and it's my biggest disappointment with him.
What I never ever ever never cease to find hilarious, however, is the right talking about how they want to defend the bill of rights, when they were the exact same people falling all over themselves a few years ago to defend every warrantless wiretap and extra-judicial indefinite detention center.

If Republicans are sincere about wanting these powers out of Obama's hands, they'll repeal the AUMF. A good decade ago, Congress voted to cede terrorist-huntin' powers to the President, and it is still in effect.

There are some serious civil liberties issues with putting that much power in the executive's hands, but that said, I don't worry at all about Obama or any president drone-striking America (or carrying out a program of assassinations via any other means). I have to look no further than the nearest policeman, sheriff, or deputy to find a government official who is authorized to kill; that isn't the same as having carte blanche to murder people, but it's a lot less hypothetical of a threat than Obama. Then there is the small matter of gun nuts like that guy who shot at a driver in a WalMart parking lot; they're a bigger threat than Obama with drones too.

Well, one of the things that will be the likely result will be a massacre in a Wal-Mart, resulting in a huge PR dip for Wal-Mart, resulting in lobbyists being called, resulting in actual change. The problem is, of course, that this only works if it's a Wal-Mart, if lots of white people die, and it's a slow news day. And it's also horrible, if the likely end.

We've been doing it for generations, it's just more brazen these days.

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-14

Not US citizens much, but plenty of assassinations.

takewithfood - 2013-03-14

People still go to Tea Party rallies?

Old_Zircon - 2013-03-14

Gallagher has to make a living somehow.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-03-15

But of course. They're cheaper than self-aware standup, and way funnier.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-03-17

It is a terrifying world for the crushingly stupid.
