Ponyville looks really brown and dusty. But at least the corn harvest is coming in nicely.
Old_Zircon
I've known a few people like Pinkie Pie. They seem to all be trying to make everyone else happy to compensate for their own profound, inescapable sadness.
Caminante Nocturno
I've known a few people like Twilight Sparkle. They're always great in the sack.

dairyqueenlatifah
I've known a few people like Caminante Nocturno.

Blue
I love it how they actually establish that in one of the episodes. We get to see that she has deep seated insecurities and that when she doesn't get validation from her friends she gets creepy and withdrawn and basically the kind of terribly lonely pony that buys a birthday cake for a figurine or a pillow or something.

Macho Nacho
I've had "friends" who were like Pinkie Pie. They were one hell of a rocky friendship and it didn't end well either.

memedumpster
I know no one else like you guys, you're all unique and fucking amazing.

Shoebox Joe
@Old Zircon's first post. That is exactly the reason why I can't listen to the song anymore.

She has everything and I have nothing. Fuck you.

Caminante Nocturno
I've got my suspicions about this "third dimension" thing.
EvilHomer
OK, this is a bit offtopic, but what the fuck is an alicorn? I was trying to DuckDuckGo some information on that last MLP vid, the Twilight Sparkle waifu one, and apparently bronies are very very angry about something called an alicorn?
EvilHomer
Also, why is that one horse pulling the other horses in a cart? That seems rather obscene and exploitative, coming from an equestriarchial society. Wouldn't that be the pony equivalent of a black man forcing another black man to pick cotton as a slave?

Caminante Nocturno
An alicorn is a winged unicorn. In the show, Alicorns are ponies of exceptional magical power. By virtue of that power, they are the royalty of Equestria. At the end of the 3rd season, Twilight Sparkle's study into friendship culminated in her turning into an alicorn, and thus a princess. There appear to be a number of people upset about this, although I refuse to understand why.

Ponies are very, VERY different from humans, and those differences go through every aspect of their societies. Certainly, the idea of a person pulling a cart would be obscene, but to a pony, it's no more scandalous than someone on a riding mower.

EvilHomer
Hang on, you mean to tell me that Equestria is some kind of racially-stratified theocratic monarchy? Ruled by a tiny cabal of quasi-divine, sorcerous Ubermensch ponies? And the cart pulling ponytariat don't even have enough class consciousness to recognize how badly they're being exploited, forced to pull singing pink "social morale officers", as they make their rounds, pacifying the masses?!

That's horrible! I hope in the next season Princess Twilight Sparkle develops a sense of social justice and starts working towards much needed reforms.

Crunchy Frog
You think it's bad now? Back in the days before the alicorns, the ruling class was exclusively unicorns, the military (and military leaders) were pegasi only, and the earth ponies were relegated to doing only manual labor. No exceptions, no real social mobility.

No, seriously. This was an actual episode. "Hearth's Warming Eve."

Cena_mark
Crunchy Frog: The Unicorns didn't rule over the others. They were three separate societies. Earth Ponies had a more democratic society than the Monarchist Unicorns or the Martial Rule Pegasi.

Xenocide
THANK GOD POETV IS FINALLY HAVING THIS DISCUSSION.

Bronies are mad about the alicorn thing for the same reason Adventure Time fans got mad when Finn got over his crush on Bubblegum and began dating Flame Princess. Because it's a change, and change is scary.

Caminante Nocturno
Well, actually, pony society is a matriarchal theocracy, seeing as how the alicorns are basically goddesses who control the sun, the moon, and emotions.

memedumpster
I almost jumped in on this conversation. You almost had me.

RocketBlender
Okay, I really want to try and understand something here. I'm not trying to be mean, I really want to know, what makes you guys like the show so much?

I guess what I really don't get about the pony fandom is how strangely dedicated some of the fans are. I have a lot of things I like, hell, anyone who clicks my history will be able to tell I'm a huge nerd, but you'd never catch spending what little extra cash I have on a Zelda T shirt, let alone one that is purple and rainbow colored. That's not even getting into all the conventions, fan made things like this that I'm assuming took a LONG time to make, etc.

Every fandom has it's fanatics, I've seen tons of things gamers, sports fans, and movies buffs do that are twice as embarrassing as some of the brony shenanigans out there, it just seems like there's more of it happening with bronies, or at least they're in the spotlight more often.

Anyway, getting back on track, what makes MLP so special to bronies?
Cena_mark
Its hard to describe why I like the show. I couldn't even get through 5 minutes of the first episode without taking a break. I think I got through it and the next episode bit by bit, but something kept drawing me in. There's an innocence to the show and I find it to be well written and produced. Also Applejack is awesome.

Xenocide
Different types of media appeal to different types of people.

MLP tends to attract creative types.

I seriously think that's all there is to it.

Cena_mark
Makes sense. I'm a musician. I rap, sing, play drum machines, keys, bass, guitar, and washboard.

RocketBlender
Xenocide; That honestly helps explain why there is so much more fanmade material for MLP floating around the internet than many other fandoms, in all honesty.

EvilHomer
I've never really watched the show, but I like watching people who have. I can never tell if they're high-functioning furries, or low-functioning anime fans, but either way they're delightful.

I tried watching the first episode a few times now, solely because of poeTV, but I never make it more than five minutes and, unlike Cena, it doesn't pull me back in. I guess I can see how people would enjoy it, but until they give Derpy her own spinoff, I'll stick to just being a fan of the pony fandom.

Cena_mark
I think its funny how fascinated POETV is with MLP and its fandom. Are Caminante and I the only ones who admit to liking it?

RocketBlender
Speaking as a parent, it's not a bad show. Hell, it's nice to have a show I don't need to worry about, like just about everything on cartoon network.

I think I've mentioned seeing the show before once or twice. It's not bad by any means, but I personally don't think it offers as much to my generation (read: almost 30) as some of the good Disney movies or Lego games do.

That's why I wanted to know what you guys like about it so much. Maybe you all see something I don't. It's not painful by any stretch, but you won't catch me in a '20% cooler!' T shirt either.

memedumpster
I think the show is good for kids and autistic adults, in a Joseph Campbell kind of way. It also depicts rural agricultural type ponies as friendly and generous, which is downright merciful for the show to do.

You guys are still so gay.

Cena_mark
You're calling us gay? Look man, we're so confident in our masculinity that we can watch this. Something you can't do. I'll bet if you watched 5 minutes of MLP your dick would fall off.

memedumpster
I watched the pilot.

robotkarateman
Seriously, if you can't laugh at the gay dragon who lost half of his mustache, you are dead inside.

Disaster
I don't consider myself a brony but speaking as someone from your age range I find it to be very nostalgic. I actually started watching it because my niece was going on and on and on about it I'd seen the other incarnations and wasn't really impressed but this one I think is really great. It's got the same sharing and friendship lessons as the 80's/90's cartoons did but it's visually and story-wise, more interesting and from an animation stand point they do some really cool stuff with it that you don't see in a lot of modern, flash animated cartoons.

Cena_mark
The pilot sucked. You have to go beyond it.
RocketBlender
The pilot sums up most of MLP experience. As I said, it's far, far from unwatchable, but I didn't see much there for me. What's a good episode to look up to get a better view at why everyone likes it so much?

Shoebox Joe
Hard to say.

Owl's Well that Ends Well is an okay one, but you have to sit through humor centered around an oblivious character. I want to go further, but I sort of feel I'd end up spoiling it. But it has one of those "I did not expect them to do that" like in Griffon The Brush-Off when Pinkie first meets Gilda. Or Pinkie's cloy humor coming off slightly intentional.

Sonic Rainboom would probably be the best since the characters are literally thrown into the problem despite their own good will. It helps to take in the bits from the pilot for Rainbow Dash, but also keeping in mind that Rarity is an independant artist trying to eek out a living.

Winter Wrap Up is awesome due to Twilight trying to fit in a traditional event when her specialty really isn't evident due to her REAL specialty being magic, which she avoids to prevent cheapening the spirit behind the event.

As for humor, I recommend Dragonshy and A Bird In The Hoof. Some of it becomes a Ricky Gervais kind of cruel.

Shoebox Joe
