The moment I voted this out of the hopper was the moment the costume first appeared onscreen.
It would seem that his hood has a reservoir tip.

It's more of a jester than a cardinal, I think. I mean, I can't see the Vatican letting someone dressed like that vote on the next Pope, and that's a haven for men in silly outfits.
Order the film and check out the cast bios
The fact that it's not a Catholic thing is very confusing.

I appreciate, however, that the scriptwriter and the author of the original comic book hails from Gaylord, Michigan, and that the first Google result I got on him was a local newspaper article with the headline "Gaylord cartoonist puts faith in comic strip".
Cardinals are aggressive and hostile birds.
Hoping thus ended just like Super.

I actually met the creators of The Cardinal like ten years ago at a regional Comicon in Novi, Michigan. Not on purpose. I briefly paused at their booth to smirk like a douchebag at the comics, and one of the two guys manning the station told me the comics were free.............UNLESS I WANTED TO PAY FOR IT!

I stared blankly at them in mute horror as the two elderly white males erupted into peals of laughter, high-fiving each other and misinterpreting my awkward silence as complete awe.

That is the creepiest birdwatching face I've ever seen.
