I live in a part of the world where tap water was never ever EVER ok to drink, especially in the smaller towns. I also remember when you go to the countryside and drink from the water bucket with sand at the bottom because they didn't have pumps with filters they had old fashion hole-in-the-ground wells.
For context, Portland voters just rejected - for the 3rd time - a bill to fluoridate their water supply. Portland has notoriously high rates of cavities and tooth decay, and is the only major US city not to fluoridate; but there are enough crazies who talk about 'water purity' and 'chemicals in the water' to shift people's opinions.
I grew up in Portland. It's a great place, but goddamn do some stupid people live there.
also, I'm surprised this clip isn't up here already.
I think it more of a practical concern. Would you trust the average Oregonian to correctly apply the fluoride to the water without poisoning everyone in the city? I think not, my friend.
