How interesting.

Old_Zircon - 2013-07-21

Hello, NSA!

jangbones - 2013-07-21

America will not rise against the oligarchy because the oligarchy is very well funded and aggressive about fighting back

One example; a nascent grassroots protest started in Raleigh against the exceptionally regressive legislation the state of North Carolina passed. In response, there has been a pretty aggressive propagnda campaign against them, and counter protests have sprung up, and its all astroturf.

The American power structure is motivated, educated, ruthless, and they have outrageous resources. Small fires of resistance will undoubtedly spring up around the country, and every time they will be extinguished before they cause any real damage.

Nominal - 2013-07-21

They won't rise up because there are always enough stupid people (33% to 51% of the voting population at any given time) dying to blindly support the powerful at any given time.

Nominal - 2013-07-21

Basically it's more hopeless than anyone realizes because it's not just a small group of evil people duping the well meaning public. It's a small group of evil people supported by a very sizeable chunk of the general public who would jump at the chance to be bootlicking brownshirts and house negros.

Old_Zircon - 2013-07-21

Let's see how it looks when gasoline hits 0/gallon.

Doomstein - 2013-07-21

None of this matters. I'm one powerball ticket away from being a multi-millionaire.

gmol - 2013-07-21

Stars for Doomstein.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-07-22

America will not rise up against the oligarchy because it is the oldest and most advanced democracy in the world and the evolution of a ruling class has been a natural byproduct of every fucking society ever in the history of anything and seriously how do you think its structurally possible to govern a nation of over 300 million people without an immeasurably complex web of interest groups and power structures?

Maru - 2013-07-21

There's a huge counter-revolutionary contingent in the American public, and not just in the provinces. Combine that with a weak labor ideology and inchoate liberalism mired in identity politics, and you won't see anything like a populist revolution in America.

Hooker - 2013-07-21

There's also the fact that the United States is still far better off than most of the world. Just in terms of liberal societies that are actually controlled by oligarchies, Russia is both in far worse shape and has a much more recent revolutionary past. I consider myself very radically minded (I'm currently reading Life and Death in Shanghai and I'm always finding myself angry at the author for her wealth and sympathizing with the Maoists - which is insane), but let's have some fucking perspective, please.

Maru - 2013-07-22

There's still plenty to revolt over. That we're comparing ourselves favorably to Russia now is proof enough of that.

Hooker - 2013-07-22

We can also compare ourselves favourably to every civilization in human history except America 40ish years ago.

kingarthur - 2013-07-22

Is this more of the same Americans don't know how good they have it / look at the third world nonsense I've heard libertarians spout at me? Because it sure sounds like a shut up and eat your moldy vegetables kinda spiel.

Maru - 2013-07-22

We're better than the Aztecs, Sparta, and post-collapse Russia. That's fucking perspective alright.

memedumpster - 2013-07-22

We wont be better than the Aztecs, Sparta, and post-collapse Russia if there's a revolution, you have no perspective. You assume that your violence fantasies somehow make you right. You're an animal with no thought at all. You probably have a list of "people you would kill that would make the world better." That list can only ever have one person on it. EVER.

Hooker - 2013-07-22

What I'm saying is that some civilizations have had revolution and some haven't. America today is near the top of social liberty and standard of living. There isn't going to be a revolution any time soon. To think otherwise is ridiculous.

Paracelsus - 2013-07-22

Check in when we're all a little less sickeningly obese and a little less well-provided with cheap luxuries.

Maru - 2013-07-22

Lmfao. Did you just watch Batman 3? A revolution doesn't have to be remotely violent. It's about cultivating a class consciousness and a solidarity with other laborers so it's possible to exert some kind of collective will on a horrifically iniquitous status-quo. Leftist terrorism has hardly even existed in America outside the imagination of a few retarded reactionaries, like Rush Limbaugh, or in your case, dummies like Frank Miller or Christopher Nolan.

The history of class warfare in America consists of nonviolent civil activism being destroyed or brutalized by absurdly disproportionate police force or plain old mercenaries, like the Pinkertons. Those are the people you should be afraid of, not this adolescent fantasy about rioters running through the street spray-painting anarchy A's on buildings.

Maru - 2013-07-22

@memedumpster

memedumpster - 2013-07-22

Nolan movies suck.

I'm not auditioning for a new zerdzer, so let's just skip to the cliff's notes.

1.) Nonviolent revolutions take an educated populace capable of reason, we're stupid as fuck and the most heavily armed people in the world. Don't confuse us with educated humans capable of reason. No one else in the world does.
2.) I'm not using kids with spraycans as a strawman, I'm talking about actual adults with firearms who want a revolution with no fucking plan with what they'd do with the country once the blood dried. I hope to god you're the former and not the latter.
3.) No one knows the extent of who or what is doing this to everyone, because knowledge is the devil to everyone in America, so the odds of a revolutionary doing anything but oppressing people who don't deserve it are slim. Once the soft targets are gone, it's social inquisition time again, and once that settles, more of the same.
4.) Your jargon shows a clear lack of vocabulary and adult thinking. How about instead of throwing bullshit buzzwords at me, you lay out a plan how this dumb shit is supposed to work in a country that burns itself down when their team wins. You show me how you dressed the animals up and taught them to waltz, and I'll play along. You're not the first person full of shit, you know.

Maru - 2013-07-22

@meme I smell another poe'r melt-down coming on.

Also I love how your core point now is that I'm a stupid animal for not dismissing the entire American public as stupid animals. That's adult thinking for sure. The funny thing though is that I -was- dismissive, and skeptical of the possibility of a social "revolution" in America. Are you guys trying to trick me? How am I getting sucked into arguing the opposite of my position?

Here's another groaner: "Lack of vocabulary." If simple phrases like "labor" and "class conscious" are scaring you, then... I don't know how to dumb it down any further. You're an apolitical guy who's frightened and confused by all of this, and doesn't where to turn. You can't tell the difference between rightwinger gun-nuts and fucking Chris Hedges. I don't know what to say to you.

memedumpster - 2013-07-22

So that's your plan? Brother, if your revolution hinges on overthrowing me, you won. I look forward to your universal healthcare and responsible firearm edicts.

Thank you.

Maru - 2013-07-22

I look forward to you continuing to argue with the guy in your head, and not the person you're posting at.

memedumpster - 2013-07-23

All you have to do to prove me wrong is show me you have a plan. I really did think you had one and was hoping it would be smart when you shared it. You are correct, I had a false view of you in my head and was just talking to myself there.

StanleyPain - 2013-07-22

Chris Hedges making a ludicrous, sweeping statement that lacks perspective??
NOOO!!!!!

Maru - 2013-07-22

Add this to the list of why you won't see a populist movement in America--the trend of liberals constantly biting any hand that threatens to feed them.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-07-22

lmbo

Oscar Wildcat - 2013-07-22

Bah. People keep saying this about North Korea as well. Yet we are on Kim Il III or something like that, yes? The key is brainwashing, and it's one of the few things we do right here in the good old US of A.

Maru - 2013-07-22

Thank you.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-12-22

What a useless little man.
