I got hit by an IED in one of those. We never drove it above 45mph. Now I know why.
so are they too heavy for the brakes, or are they just built of paper except for the cabins?

They clearly have anti-lock brakes. You would think that they could program the computer to make that not happen.

The MRAP can take quite a bit of damage from I know, when I was hit in it (one of 2, I was also hit while riding an up-armored HMMW) it ringed a few bells and cracked some windows but to no other significant effect. These vehicles aren't even American in design, they're South African I think--they've been building these things for decades, I think a good example of an American designed armored vehicle would be a up-rated 7-ton truck that I got to drive a lot--that thing was a BEAST:
The MRAP had SHIT suspension, any slight bump and you were jolted everywhere, especially riding in the turret, I hated gunning on those things. The 7-ton was a lot nicer, so were the HMMVs.
Also those MRAPs were made with crew survival as a priority, of which they have accomplished stellar results, I'm guessing not having a ferrari-like suspension was a compromise.
they are heavy as hell and visibility is minimal. the undersides are fitted with heavy, angled armor that diverts explosive forces away and to the sides of the vehicle. you roll over an IED in this thing and maybe you get some broken legs. roll over the same explosive in a hummer and you go home in a box.
and there doesn't seem to be ABS on the rear wheels, or the computer just says 'fuck it'.
Most of the MRAPs were designed and made by Navistar in Illinois, although this thing doesn't look like the picture of their version on Wikipedia. According to the article there were several different models that made it through different stages of competition for the MRAP contract, so this could well be one of the failures.
Yeah I don't remember riding in this one, but I think I've seen models like these at least in Iraq. The one I rode in looked like a sci-fi future tank thing.
May I just say how honored our forces should have been to have titled nobility serving alongside them.
Though I am puzzled. I thought Barons went in more for airplanes, trying to shoot down enemy doghouses?
