Super pale nerd putting the white in white knight.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-12

For you.

Blue - 2013-08-12

People that use that phrase are invariably shitty misogynists. For the record, anybody that doesn't fucking stand up against you fucking MRA assholes is a shitty, pathetic person.

Cena_mark - 2013-08-12

Oh come on Blue, you know I'm not a misogynist. I just know that Anita Sar-skeez-ian is a scamming, thieving, false intellectual worthy of criticism and those who take her mantle are also deserving of such.
I'm not an MRA asshole. The MRA movement is as stupid as Sar-skeez-ian's supporters.
Blue you should change your name to White, cause that's the kind of knight you are.

Sudan no1 - 2013-08-12

1. Fuck you Cena, you have always been a fucking cancer.

2. White Knight is a shitty turn of phrase used by misogynists who don't like being called out for their misogyny, if you are non-misogynist as you claim you are you should stop using it NOW.

3. "Sar-skeez-ian" ...really? I don't agree with everything she says either but this shit is childish.

4. IIRC Blue is a woman, are women even capable of being white knights? I thought that phrase was reserved for men who stick up for women on the misogynist parts of the internet.

Cena_mark - 2013-08-12

1. I'm not a cancer. I made a face turn over 2 years ago. Y'all are gonna keep fucking around with me and turn me back to the old me.
2 and 3. Using a certain phrase doesn't make you a certain thing. I'm not using white knight in a mysoginistic sense. I using it to mock those who take the side of Sar-woman who performs sexual acts for money-sian.
4. Are you saying women can't be white knights? And you call me the sexist? Women can be anything they want INCLUDING white knights.

Sarkeesian is destroying POETV. Any video remotely related to her brings about nothing but discord.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-12

Stop white knighting for Blue, So-dumb no1.

"Misogynist" is just a shitty turn of phrase used by kneejerk misandronists to preemptively smear anyone who voices an opinion they don't like, regardless of the context of the discussion or the material validity of the label. It's a lazy (and usually inaccurate) ad hominem attack, that's used as much to give the speaker permission to ignore arguments he has no response against as it is to make the other guy shut up.

But you can still use it if you want, you man-hating feminazi, you.

poorwill - 2013-08-12

I've seen 'white knight' used quite a lot by feminists referring to men who step in to defend them when they are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves. They might be using it ironically though, I'm not sure.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-12

It's perfectly 'ronic in that context. Sarks is a great example of this: she got her start by bitching about (what she perceived to be, rightly or wrongly) mens' need to step in and "save" women bleeding out into the plot of video games. So what do the men do? Fall all over themselves trying to step in and "save" her from the trolls.

For all her faults, I don't think needing a man to take care of her (in exchange for sex, presumably) is one of them.

Sudan no1 - 2013-08-13

I've said my piece, getting Cena and EvilHomer to embarass themselves further in this thread is victory enough for me.

Poorwill, even if it was used seriously by feminists once or twice, it's still an instant way to identify yourself as a jackass.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-13

That's right, sudan. You got no moves left. Tap out and go home.

As long as we work together, me and Cena are an unbeatable tag team, and we're TAKING that championship belt at Summer Slam.

Sudan no1 - 2013-08-13

Lol, you guys are more like Beavis and Butthead. Too stupid to hate.

poopy - 2013-08-13

stars for cena, homer and sudan

Quad9Damage - 2013-08-13

To be fair, there is an unofficial psychological term, "White Knight Syndrome,' that refers to people who have a compulsive need to rescue others out of a need for self-worth.

I loathe 'white knight' in all other contexts. I used to wander into random 4chan threads where that phrase would get thrown at detractors who objected to rape threat bombings in progress. Based on everything else I've seen, 'white knight' seems to have fallen into the lexicons of douchebags everywhere. If someone thinks a post that says Anita Sarkeesian should be bent over a block of 360s and repeatedly sexually assaulted is gross, that someone gets called a white knight for the crime of trying to be nice.

That said, the first part of "Damsels in Distress" was interesting. The second one was kinda boring. The only thing I got out of it was that no woman in a video game should ever be rescued again ever. Kairi losing her soul and going comatose in "Kingdom Hearts" is a total male rescue fantasy (in that three seconds of 'KH' she showed). I feel awful for starting to think this way because I feel like it associates me with the rape-and-murder threat assholes.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-13

See, that's one of the big problems with Sarkeesian's approach. There's absolutely nothing wrong with you enjoying a male rescue fantasy like that one part from Kingdom Hearts. It doesn't make you a rapist, it's just natural, healthy, biologically programed male-ness.

I'll give her this, Anita stops short of coming right out and saying that rescuing damsels is wrong and anyone who wants to do this is a woman-hating troglodyte. Such a statement would be a concrete thesis that requires defending. That's a rookie mistake in the Crit world; Anita is a trained academic, she knows how to talk a lot without actually saying anything.

But that LACK of analysis engenders these sort of responses - responses such as guilt over playing Kingdom Hearts. She deconstructs, we are invited to fill in the unspoken subtext. Subtext which is not only wrong (in part because S-woww's initial analysis is wrong), but which causes us grief over our sexual identity every bit as cruel and unnecessary as, say, the Christian guilt-tripping of homosexuals. Sarkeesian is literally no better than Phyllis Schlafly, and really, show of hands, who here HASN'T made casual rape threats against Phyllis Schlafly?

There are plenty of OTHER reasons to feel guilty about playing Kingdom Hearts, of course.

Quad9Damage - 2013-08-13

Feeling sad because your childhood friend can't wake up is an example of making women a prize for the male to win. Stabbing yourself in the chest with a giant key to rescue the girl (and whatever the hell else that did in the game, I can't remember) isn't a necessary element of the "onslaught-of-my-point" montage and can be left out.*

I guess I'm doing a total heel-turn here. Sarkeesian shows an entire montage of clips during her point about women being kidnapped/placed in bondage and leaves most of them completely out of context. Delegating the former heroine in "Starfox Adventures" to the role of a captive for Fox to ogle over is ridiculous. Sarkeesian made a good point there. In the second video's montage she shows Ashley Graham being put in metal locks for no more than a second and doesn't explain why or how or what the situation is. To me it felt like a scare tactic; here are tons of clips of women being restrained, here is one more on the pile.**

*I questioned every second of time I spent with Kingdom Hearts and whether or not I should even go on living after suffering through the "Finny Fun" musical number in 'KH2.' That game also ended with a gangbang made out of hugs.

**Although in the American version of Resident Evil 4 we get a US exclusive of tit jiggling animation for Ashley that was missing from the Japanese version. So, uh...yeah.

Nominal - 2013-08-13

You know, the whole "misogynist" retort whenever someone calls her approach questionable is starting to sound like the whole "hating freedom" line.

Old_Zircon - 2013-08-13

fluffy - 2014-09-21

Sarkeesian isn't saying that those things shouldn't be in games or even that they're bad per se, just that there's a ridiculous systemic bias towards female characters being used as nothing more than objectified trophies in games, and she'd like to see more balance and more exploration of different themes for a fucking change.

Jericho - 2013-08-12

those lets players didn't "make" that content. the people involved in making the game did.

Sudan no1 - 2013-08-12

This. "A video game under copyright law is an audiovisual work, which gives a public performance right to the copyright holder," which means all "let's plays" could be shut down at the whims of the companies that make the games.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/07/why-nintendo-can-legally -shut-down-any-smash-bros-tournament-it-wants/

It's still fine to use small portions of the game for the purposes of criticism, of course. That's called fair use.

1 for idiots complaining about Sarkeesian, getting tired of it.

Cena_mark - 2013-08-12

Her E-begging campaign was based on the claim that she needed money for video games to do her research. So this shows that she's using the funds for other things and she's not doing actual research. Rather than buying the games and playing them for their full context she's lazily skimming through let's plays and taking some scenes.
This is intellectually dishonest and straight up unethical.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-12

Isn't there a reviews process on Kickstarter, to help ensure that the money raised isn't just being embezzled? You may be on to something there, Cena. Could be worth looking into.

Cena_mark - 2013-08-12

I don't know if there's a process, but Sarkeesian has been called out on the lack of improvement in her production process post Kickstarter. Her production style hasn't changed at all. No games, no research, no improved production. Sorry marks, but you just bought her a friggin' condo.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-13

I checked into it, and Kickstarter can't force project creators to use their money properly. However, the project creators ARE legally obliged to provide refunds to backers, IF a backer requests one.

Sadly, this means that you'd have to convince the people who sent her money in the first place, that not only is their money being wasted (and it most certainly is), but that letting her buy a condo and bottles of Patron with said money is not in itself a noble and progressive act (maybe if I let her keep the money ANYWAY, she'll reward me with non-sexist blowjobs?!). It's up to the discretion of the individual, on a case by case basis, and knowing the sort of idiots who actually forked money over to S-woww?

Guess she got away it. Good for her.

Sudan no1 - 2013-08-13

You geniuses didn't give her any money, you have no right to complain.

I gave her five bux and I have received MORE THAN I EVER dreamed for in terms of gamer butthurt. :D

EvilHomer - 2013-08-13

Where's the logic in that? Bullshit is bullshit, whether I paid for it or not. For example, I never bought a Chevy Corvair, yet that doesn't mean I can't recognize that a car designed to basically kill it's drivers is horseshit.

Did you really pay five whole dollars just to make people "butthurt"?

EvilHomer - 2013-08-13

What am I saying of course you did.

Sudan no1 - 2013-08-13

It's fun to make shitty people mad, what can I say? It's the same reason I donate to SPLC.

And do you think five dollars is a lot of money or something? I've spent five bucks on MUCH much stupider things. A new copy of Duke Nukem Forever, for example.

Just kidding I would never buy DNF.

Spaceman Africa - 2013-08-13

I don't understand the whole talk of comparing her to some thief. She asked for a bit money and due to exposure got a lot more. Sure you could criticize that she's not that in-depth in the subjects but I'm sure whoever funded the thing is satisfied by it (and the reaction). She made a Kickstarter to make a web series, she made said series. Quit being children about it.

Cena_mark - 2013-08-13

I like the SPLC because I'm a progressive dude, but to call that charlatan a comparable investment is just plain stupid. You're a troll and you gave money to that troll who has hurt feminists as a result of her flimsy brand of feminism. Instead of bringing discussion all she's done is label gamers and the industry as evil mean misogynists. Of course you're going to get a negative reaction when you approach the problem like that. Just like Andrea Dworkin she just wants to fight.
I'm not even a gamer. I haven't bought a game in years.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-13

Well, I guess the SPLC thing makes sense. I don't donate to that partisan hate group myself, but I do donate to the ACLU, for somewhat similar reasons.

And Anita is pretty different from Dworkin, Cena. Dworkin was a fat old bag who led an unbelievably tragic life, and let her own (admittedly justifiable) neurotic sexual hangups cloud her objectivity and dictate the entire course of her academic career, causing serious damage to an entire generation of upper class culture-producers in the process. She was the sex-hating puritan version of Hannibal Lecter; an almost sympathetic product of genuine trauma who used her mental gifts to take her psychotic pain out on the rest of society. Also she ate people.

Sarkeesian, on the other, is a perfectly fuckable privileged white chick who got an expensive degree in Womens Studies and, having nothing better to do, decided to make some money by playing video games and hacking out shallow cultural criticism.

Sudan no1 - 2013-08-16

Sarkeesian has already helped by bringing more attention to how women are portrayed, and by exposing the sexists hiding in gaming's woodwork.

Thanks for reminding me about the ACLU! I've been meaning to give to them too, for similar reasons -- making shitty people mad.

So, Cena and Homer. Keep being mad. And shitty.

Mother_Puncher - 2013-08-12

There are people who record themselves playing video games, there are people who watch people who record themselves playing video games, there are people who complain when someone takes part of their video of them playing a video game and cropping it for their own video and there is now one person who says people who take a part of a video of someone recording themselves playing video games for people to watch is wrong and is stealing.

EvilHomer - 2013-08-12

I already gave mine to Cena. :(

Binro the Heretic - 2013-08-12

We don't have a "Waambulance" tag yet?

memedumpster - 2013-08-13

I submitted a video with a "take the waambulance to sucky baby hospital" tag but I don't recall if it made it out of the hopper.

Nominal - 2013-08-12

It's wrong to comment on an attractive girl's sexual viability when it comes to this subject, but doughy white guys are open season? I need to get the ground rules down before I go rescue the gender neutral VIP.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-08-12

That is the flimsiest argument against her that I've heard in a while, and that says a lot.

Dr Robot - 2013-08-13

Not to go changing the subject drastically, but that guy's wearing a wedding ring.
