Let's not save our sailors and pretend we did

EvilHomer - 2013-08-19

You were one of those douchebags from the Anti-Sailor Moon Webring, weren't you?

USAGI IS NOT A CANNIBAL. STOP PHOTOSHOPPING HER TO BE ONE.

roofle - 2013-08-19

Ha! Sadly no, but I know enough second hand information about the fandom and the show itself thanks to an acquaintance who knew everything Sailor Moon.

Apparently Sailor Moon is one of those untapped goldmines in the US to a large number of men and women who haven't grown up yet.

Save Our Sailors is mad old school; that project closed down almost ten years ago, and it's heyday was maybe ten years before that. Your Sailor Moon friend clearly knows his stuff!

SOS was one of the first places I frequented online (that, and Encyclopedia Metallica), and their geek war against the ASM triggered a serious childhood existential crisis. I actually *preferred* the Anti-Sailor Moon sites to the SOS network. Not because I was an anti-fan, but because at that time, the ASM was the only place where you could find good grimdark fanworks. I couldn't stand the frou frou kawaii glitter-dorks over at SOS; I wanted to see Sailor Moon chopping people in half with a samurai sword, not skipping about dreaming of hunky bishi-boys. Yet I unironically loved the shit out of Sailor Moon, so there was no way I could embrace the vibrant hate-couture that cropped up in the wake of Sailor Moon's mid-90s frontal assault on nerd society. I couldn't fit in with either crowd, and I don't think my inner turmoil resulting from this conflict was ever fully resolved.

I'll give you an example. In Shadow Warrior (which was the best old-school FPS game, BTW), there's a Sailor Moon easter egg. The game includes a number of hidden areas; in one, a submarine, you can find Sailor Moon herself, half-naked and lying on a bed. I used to spend hours in that sub, worrying about whether or not I should blow her up with a sticky bomb. Hours, just standing there, going back and forth, back and forth in my head. Like, on the one hand, right, I blew up everyone else in that game, be they innocent anime girls or pus-dripping samurai ghost monsters. That was part of the fun, that was the whole point of the game! But on the other hand, it was Sailor Moon. SAILOR MOON! Could I really justify callously murdering Best Senshi, even though video game society expected it of me? DEMANDED it of me?! So I'd save and reload and save reload and eventually I just said to hell with it and stopped playing altogether. Never did get past that stage.

In conclusion, yes, you're right. Sailor Moon is a goldmine.

As stated in previous LJ-PoEsts, I was, during middle school, a flaming otherkin, and Sailor Moon was my totally real astral waifu. I was most def a fan.

Yeah he's someone who is pretty deep into the anime fansub dumbshit community, and loves him his magical girls. I never got the appeal of it all, but he grew up with the show and it was apparently the only anime they got over on his side of the world for a bit. The old merchandise is also ungodly expensive because of the insane fandom this show has for some reason. Another former female friend wanted a Star Locket, and when I looked them up those cost anywhere from 500 to 2 grand, which is absurd considering it's a simple toy that plays a tune.

Cherry Pop Culture - 2013-08-19

*ahem*

Long ago, I had plenty of Moonie merchandise and there were a handful of websites that had checklists and pictures. That musical star locket was supposedly hard to find in the first place. The US never got one, and Italy and Japan were the only locations to have any for sale in toy stores. The locket was first produced during the first season and no one knew how popular the show would be and none were super mass produced. I think there was a remake toy about 10 years ago with a new run of merchandise celebrating the show's tenth anniversary. Those stupid things were expensive and in Japan only. It doesn't help fanboys and fangirls drive prices up. I do know Sailor Moon has plenty of out-there fans. What fandom doesn't?

More please.

MrBuddy - 2013-08-19

No Tuxedo Mask?

Sanest Man Alive - 2013-08-23

Maybe he'll turn up later as the Cyberdemon, launching exploding roses. Wait, no, that would (a) assume anyone plays this crap long enough to fight one and (b) look cool.

As crappy as this mod is, at least he recognized Mercury's superiority by giving her the BFG.
