Jet Bin Fever - 2013-08-22
I avoided seeing this as a child. Really dodged a bullet.

From Wikipedia:
"This movie is the winner of four Emmy Awards, A Bronze Award, Houston International Film Festival."
There are times I think kid-oriented stuff wins awards because there's not a whole lot of competition or those judging it just pick the thing that makes their brains melt the least.
|
Rangoon - 2013-08-22 IIRC, those four Emmy awards were regional Emmys given out by local public television stations.

Did anyone else think the repetition of the word "closet" at the beginning might have been some kind of cry for help?
|
|
SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-08-22 Not in today's free-thinking society, no. Back then, it would've been scandalous, as opposed to today when more level heads would just look at his work and say, "this is crap."

cognitivedissonance - 2013-08-22 Actually people raised in the 70s have no idea of the context of the rainbow as a gay cultural symbol. My mom, for YEARS, looked at the rainbow stickers on cars and told me that it "looks cheerful!".
I told her what they mean, and she was horrified. Bear in mind I told this about two years ago. I think I destroyed something simple and good in her heart.

If you like Gallagher, but worry he's not safe for the kids.
|
SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-08-22 Not any more, he ain't. If I ever catch my kid watching Gallagher's recent stuff, I'll arrange an intervention before he becomes a Teabagger with anger management issues and a patina of racism.

Amazingly, he was never allowed to make another film ever again.
So from what I can gather, the theme of this was that imagination was way more important than standing up for yourself in reality. Perfect, thank you so much 80s children's television.

Didn't Maurice Sendak design the set and props?
