Old Men in hot tubs and brains with eyes are only some of the fun things to see in Robocop 2

Meatsack Jones - 2013-08-24

I'm curious to see the remake mainly because of seeing these trailers. I wonder if the producers understood that the absurdity of mega-corps, military hardware being tested in Detroit, and the general comic book quality is what made them fun to watch.

I think in your heart, you already know the answer.

Also - I never understood the hate for Robocop 2, sure it's not nearly up to par with the first, but still head and shoulders above most action flicks.

How could they, when all of the things you mention have come to pass? Hell, in this dystopic nightmare future movie, even Detroit get's bailed out. In the real world it just declared bankruptcy.

A few years ago I read the director and star's first words about the remake before they actually filmed anything, and I knew it was doomed from the start. The images they've produced with the lousy ninja suit and cockrocket cycle have only cemented that.

The people behind it seriously do not get what made Robocop an amazing movie. They are treating it like reversing everything that made the original what it was will make what they're producing more original and deeper in some way, when by default it will just look like a poor remake with no elements of what made the original good to begin with.

First of all, this is my favorite Robocop movie with some of my favorite scenes in the series (Robocop 2 Beta Test Failure Footage scene anyone?). I also never understood why it got so much crap when the steaming pile known as Robocop 3 exists.

Secondly, people are dumb coupled with us currently living in the social nightmare scenario Robocop unintentionally predicted. Even if they remade Robocop as a satire of our current situation, I don't think anyone in on the joke in the theaters would be laughing.

sosage - 2013-08-24

...and by currently living, I mean that we have robots battling each other in a monster movie style climax. Not so much corporations owning everything. That is just fantasy.

That thing's a killer

I think RoboCop is one of the truly perfect movies that speaks to me on every level, evidenced by the fact that I hate cops... except RoboCop.

I thought RoboCop2 was a more than worthy sequel, with some of the best moments. Kaine was a great character, and the giant robot claw junkie twitch scene is triumphant.

StanleyPain - 2013-08-24

I thought this movie was fucking great. It was just this blast of offensive, ludicrously violent bullshit spat into your face for 2 hours and it was wonderful. I remember how the idea of a super-violent, 13-year old drug dealer was pretty much the moral panic/end of civilization at the time and the violence alone put this movie on so many lists about how horrifically immoral Hollywood was becoming.

I thought this was a brilliant sequel...not quite on the same level as if it had been Verhoeven, probably, but still...great movie.

3.....not so much.

A robocop remake might not be that bad. The Dredd reboot was one of the best films I'd seen all year.

Nominal - 2013-08-24

There was nowhere go but up with the Dredd reboot.

Nominal - 2013-08-24

Hey the Robocop remake might not be so bad. After all take a look at the recent Total Recall....

OH NO!

infinite zest - 2013-08-25

I feel like my generation had the best movies that you either had to sneak into or have a cool enough mom or dad to take you to (I'm of the Robocop/Total Recall/Terminator 2 generation of teens.) My dad took me to Robocop 2 and he's laughing the entire movie and I'm like "DAD STOP! THIS IS SERIOUS!!!!!!!"

infinite zest - 2013-08-25

wait.. I was 9 when this one came out. Dang.

sosage - 2013-08-25

I was 12. Unfortunately, what I think happened is that people the same age as IZ and I grew up to wind up in a position to remake these movies...and never grew out of the "DAD STOP! THIS IS SERIOUS!!!!!!!" phase. I have a feeling these are also the kids that would say, "I'd totally make an (fill in blank) movie...but my version would be, like, totally dark..." all the way into their late 20's.
