God, I forgot about this movie. Real blast from the past for me.

Also, I think my POE experiences are all starting to bleed together. Does anyone else see the Persona 3 penis monster in the suggested videos at the end of this?

Wow, I forgot all about this movie. It was the pinnacle of comedy to 13 year old me.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-09-05

Never saw it, but I do love the changing of the Barney-like mask for the dinosaur after he gets harpooned. It's an old camera trick, but the fact that the mask should stay fixed from one scene to the next sells the look of surprise.

The best part about seeing this as a kid was all those times in the movie it cut to the Eskimo setting up and preparing for the kill. Then the movie ends, and just as you're beginning to wonder whatever happened to that Eskimo guy, you see this.

Run, Florist!

I have never heard of this movie until just now so...wow.

Nothing is quite as dated as anti-Barney the Dinosaur jokes, in that they feel even more dated than popular references from previous decades - I mean I understood some peoples' negative reactions to the thing, whether annoyed at it's seeming ubiquity at the time, or that the show was like the most low-effort, bare-bones attempt at merchandised PBS kids 'edutainment', but still, come on.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-09-05

Doing a little research shows that Barney first aired in '92 and made its last new show in '09.

This movie was filmed in 1998.

Do you want to bitch that "Back to the Future" had too many 80's references while you're at it?

lotsmoreorcs - 2013-09-05

who remembers the tomes of anti-barney articles/literature during the web 1.0 days?

EvilHomer - 2013-09-05

Can we have an anti-Barney humor week? Please?

BHWW - 2013-09-05

I'm referring to those salad days of Web 1.0 and those halcyon days in the 1990s when the chances of coming across some anti-Barney references in some film or TV show were greater than they were today.

sosage - 2013-09-05

The only people who ever thought anti-Barney commentary was funny were the lame schmucks telling the joke. When Roseanne Barr was making the joke, it had already gone through about a thousand other people.

EvilHomer - 2013-09-05

If you didn't think anti-Barney humor was funny back in elementary and middle school, then you lived a sad and wasted life.

Haha, you remember the one where Barney ate a bunch of kids?

dairyqueenlatifah - 2013-09-05

The only people I ever knew who thought anti-Barney jokes were funny were elementary school kids like myself who would run around singing their own bastardized mean spirited version of the "I love you, you love me" song.

Then again, I do remember an urban sketch comedy show that was on when I was a kid called "Uptown Comedy Club" that was late night and aimed specifically at adults, had a big sketch about how the guy in the Barney suit was actually a depressed alcoholic who hated what he did for a living. The audience either genuinely thought it was funny or the people backstage were really abusing the "LAUGH" button that evening.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-09-06

It's more of a cathartic thing than "ha-ha funny," I believe. Parents often go to sleep hearing THAT voice singing THOSE songs, and some are further irritated by the alterations to the lyrics they grew up with.

You see similar jabs taken at Pokemon, Thomas, and the Teletubbies. If something gets ubiquitous, it gets annoying, and the cheap joke is to show it being killed/blown up/stabbed/whatever.

The segment that hated Barney for the most humorous reason (in my opinion) was some Southern Baptists who I knew. They warned other parents that Barney was Satanic, primarily because every episode had him being "summoned" via the children performing a "ritual chant."
