I dunno, it is a bummer, but the Cossacks were the genocidal pillaging wing of Imperial Russia for centuries, having performed the largest genocide against the Jews in the 17th century (about 300,000 dead), dwarfing all other pogroms leading up to Nazi Germany. Not just Jews of course, they picked on Tatars, Catholics, Lithuanians and Poles too. It was just a clusterfuck of cleansing.
