I don't think John Lennon owed it to the world to give up all he owned. I don't even think writing a song about it obligated him to. The problem is that he was happy enough to let people view him as an icon of selflessness, and at the very least he did nothing to discourage people from viewing him that way.

If he'd said "I'm not enlightened enough to give up what I own, but I do see it as a worthy ideal", I could deal with Lennon a lot better. To such extent as I have to deal with him at all, which is pretty much none.
