How is this a positive feature in a pet?

Old_Zircon - 2013-12-04 I had 5 of these as a kid and none of them ever mimicked anything.

gravelstudios - 2013-12-04 Ours has the telephone ring down pat. It took us a while to figure that one out.

gravelstudios - 2013-12-04 It helps if it's alone. If you have more than one, they'll just sing to each other. The bird has to be pretty desperate for companionship to start talking to you (or the phone, or the TV, etc.)

"Bird to your mother!" should be a tag.

Kim, a friend from school had a male one, but they didn't know that until later, so he was named Holly. He was so good at doing the phone, if you were in another room it sounded exactly like it.
Kim was into the Monkees band, and Holly would say 'Peter Tork' and other names. I'm not sure if he barked like their Dog Buttons or not though.
That was surprising, up until that time I didn't even know that parakeets could talk, I thought that only parrots could, so I thought that they had a freak bird!

It's like having one of those talking toys that says 3 or 4 things that you have to take the batteries out after your kids have it for a week.
