I sometimes stop at McDonald's when I go fishing in the morning. One breakfast sandwich and a large coffee keeps me going for about four hours. How the fuck can he keep all that food down?

He has a point about how much it costs though. It's gotten really bad in just the past couple of years. Yeah, you can fill yourself up pretty easy getting several dollar menu items, but stray from it at all and you get ass-raped. Where I live, the McDouble is more than a dollar now (without sales tax) and I believe the only sandwich left on the dollar menu is the McChicken. Other big chains are worse though. It's at the point now where there really is no excuse to eat fast food unless you're craving something specific.

Ass-raped? Wow, you live in a rough neighborhood.

It's not that the food is getting smaller-- there is a thing called inflation, which applies to money and apparently, Americans. I'm sorry your ass feels that way though.

McDonalds prices are inflating at a much higher rate than other food options, though. McDonalds used to make sense for the urban poor due to the proportional costs of eating off the dollar menu versus, say, buying food at the store, or eating at a slightly more upmarket establishment. McDonalds had awful food, but for many consumers it was far and away the cheapest option. Now, though, McDonalds is pricing itself out of it's ecological niche - their food is still garbage, and consumers can find plenty of alternatives that are tastier, more substantial, and considerably healthier to eat, within the same price range.

For three dollars, one could buy a horseshit McFlurry, or one could buy an overpriced minitub of gas station Ben & Jerry's. You'll get roughly the same volume of ice cream from each, yet Ben & Jerry's is clearly the better option.

I'd also like to take a minute or two to address the inevitability of inflation. Inflation is NOT inevitable, at least not to such a degree that consumers should be content to take a passive role and accept significant price hikes. You see this line or reasoning time and time again: x increases in cost, so consumers sit back and say oh well that's life, inflation happens. NO. Prices are a function of the market. They reflect the amount of money that consumers are *willing* to pay for a given good or service. Consumers have the power to dictate prices - on an individual level, maybe there's nothing you can do, but I guarantee you, if everyone refused to pay three dollars for their McFlurrys, McDonalds would drop their prices.

Before anyone complains, yes, I am aware that currency inflation, as the result of bank speculation and government printing, will play a significant role under fiat currency schemes. I am also aware that sales price inflation is at least partially driven by other factors on the market (including the price of competing products, state-mercantilist licensing fees, wage laws, and the cost of raw materials). All the same, consumers have the ultimate say in pricing - if we refuse to buy a product at a given price, that product will either drop in price, or cease to exist. And if McFlurrys are things which, in our current market, absolutely CANNOT exist without a three dollar price point, then I say good riddance.

this.
any of the non-dollar menu burger meals are between 8-12 dollars. Gourmet burgers plates at any of the rather upscale restaurants in town are . Picking real food is not much of a choice if the difference is change.

the McDonalds isnt even open past 11pm.

The above is correct of course.

While the price point is the main concern here, I think the real problem here revolves around what food is available to the poor. Most cheap things that you can make for less than 20 dollars don't constitute good nutrition, as much as they beat a blank, let alone the fact that 20 dollars doesn't go that far at the grocery store anymore. The poor buy things that pass for food because it's what they can afford, pay no mind to the fact that these awful substitutes are readily available for their purchase, rather than increasing the quality of those items, or making a healthier alternative available to them. Cheap food is inherently unhealthy, that's why it's cheap. I don't know if this guy is poor or not for sure, I'm not even sure of where he lives, but I'm pretty sure what he can buy has more to do with him being fat than his lifestyle.

On that note though, restaurant food is actually worse than McDonalds in succession. Yes, it's got more nutrition, but if you eat a gourmet burger a day as a replacement for a Mc Double, you'll gain quite a few more pounds by the end of the month. That's even if such places are actually in the vicinity of the poor.

Unless you live in small-town America, there's no fucking excuse for paying this kind of money for this garbage. Almost everywhere has places where you can get more food of better quality for the same price. If you must have have franchise fast food, even Wendy's is ten times better (salads, wraps, etc.) So I mean, this guy has no fucking place to complain if he has the spare money to spend on fucking McDonalds. You could go to the grocery store if you're that poor and could buy you stuff to make basic food for a week.
