It's hard to overstate how much hoopla there was over this game in the late 90s. Computer Gaming World wrang a whole year's worth of material out of the fact that Dennis Hopper's character was named "Mr Beautiful."

Warning: the photo realism of this game WILL make you kill people in the real world. Also the opening theme is one of NIN better songs, for sure.

Truly this is the future of videogames.

This game was really weird in that it was an adventure game with almost no item puzzles. Around 90% of the puzzles were decoding cyphers.

The plot was also pretty ridiculous. It was supposed to be that the portal to hell opened up and demons walked/ruled the world. Religious zealots take power using "proof" that hell exists. You can get sent to hell, but only when sedated and hooked into flimsily disguised VR machine.

So then the game reveals the BIG TWIST that hell is just a VR simulation and the demons are just robots! It was all a hoax for religious zealots to take power! Nobody ever questioned how being sent to "hell" was exactly like the existing VR technology, and with all the manpower and logistics behind making and maintaining an army of robot demons, no one ever spilled the beans.

It was the Satanic Loose Change for its time. I blame X Files for the conspiracy obsessed 90s.

I played the shit out of this game back when I was like 12 or 13. If I recall, Dennis Hopper's in the game for like 2 minutes, but he still gets top billing over Grace Jones. That's cyberhollywood for ya's.

With no knowledge of the game itself, 13 year old me read the novelization of this shit stack back in 94 or 95. Even as a fantasy and sci-fi obsessed kid, it was just awful.
