The long flashback near the middle is genuinely effective and unsettling, too, all the more so because the rest of the movie isn't unsettling at all.

It is, and one of the 39 that were prosecuted as I recall. This movie is so good. Almost impossible to pick a favourite scene (although fairly easy to narrow it down to two!)

My big-box VHS original of this is one of the many I lost around 2008, and it's probably the one I most regret losing. I still kind of hope it's in a box in my closet and I just overlooked it.
