Fucking assholes. (The media, not Kimmel.) DO YOUR FUCKING JOBS.

ashtar. - 2014-02-23

The fact that the real news is basically idiots talking about rumors from the internet makes me feel less irresponsible for getting all my news from comments on PoeTV.
Up next, Wolf Blitzer reads your tweets!

TheOtherCapnS - 2014-02-23

Al Jazeera America. It's almost surreal to read and watch if you're used to network news. Even the comment sections are usually civil and lucid.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

When Russia Today isn't busy being the Fox News of Russia they sometimes do some real reporting on some legitimate stories in and about the USA, too. But usually they're being the Fox News of Russia.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2014-02-23

We do not forgive, we do not forget.
Our group has OVER 9000 penises, and they are all raping children.

misterbuns - 2014-02-23

The good old days.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

More like the "last dying gasps" but that WAS pretty funny.

BiggerJ - 2014-02-23

Did Oprah ever find out that she was trolled, and if so, did she ever say so?

MongoMcMichael - 2014-02-23

Legit Olympian posts what appears to be a legit concern about legit wolves roaming the hallways on her legit Twitter feed. The media reports on the rumor because A.) it is a story of public interest; and B.) because Sochi is full of legit problems, from piss-yellow drinking water to snow that turns to slush.

Then the Olympian turns up and says, "ROFLCOPTER GUYS! You so dumb for thinking Sochi has problems that need investigating." Then we stroke our chins and ruminate about how much smarter we are than the news media.

You know what else is funny? Yelling 'fire' in a movie theater well-known for its well-documented safety problems, then mocking the first responders.

SolRo - 2014-02-23

"snow that turns to slush"

I think all snow works like that.

SolRo - 2014-02-23

And why do you think a teenagers twitter account has some sort of credibility just because they're a sports star or celebrity?

Or are you just as dumb as the media?

Anaxagoras - 2014-02-23

The news media *didn't* investigate. That's the fucking problem. They just blindly reported a video w/out even trying to dig up any substantive information about it. How often are there wolf sightings? Do the Russian authorities have any comment? Have any of the Olympic athletes seen or heard anything similar? Or even how about doing some basic research about what kind of animal appeared in the video?

But hey... at least they took the time to come up with clever puns & banter, eh?

Next time think before you try to be a contrarian. The media deserves nothing but scorn for their actions surrounding this "story".

dockilljoy - 2014-02-23

Yes. Yes this a thousand times. An Olympic athlete sent a story over that they're seeing a wolf in their area and the news reporters cover it. THEY GIVE A SOURCE WHICH IS THE LYING SPORTS ATHLETE.

Fuck Kimmel. Fuck this whole 'lololol we tricked you by lying". Fuck the Kimmel writes who are just regurgitating the front page of Reddit a month later in their bits.

Bort - 2014-02-23

Do you hear all those newscasters giving their off-the-cuff opinions as to what sort of animal they're looking at? Didn't any of them consider calling a zoo or even an animal shelter to offer a more informed opinion?

I grant you, you probably couldn't expect your local news team to score an interview with Russian officials, but for heaven's sake there's got to be something they can do beyond "LOOK IT AM ANIMAL ME THINK IS HUSKY". And there had to be some Olympic reporters who could have looked into it.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2014-02-23

I wonder how quickly someone could crash the stock market by relying on the 24-hour newsfeed to relay whatever insane elaborate hoax sounds the most news-worthy? They said this whole thing was arranged (conspirators, trained animals, accurately-reconstructed architecture) in less than 24 hours.
I smell a new plot for Ocean's 14!

yogarfield - 2014-02-23

Jimmy Kimmel was.. entertaining? I'm so confused.

Prickly Pete - 2014-02-23

I'm not 100% sure I understand what Jimmy's point is. What was their crime? Not flying all the way to Sochi to try and find the wolf personally before reporting on it? He even shows what lengths he went to to make it look convincing and then acts like their dumb for being convinced by it? I think his comment is muddied by the story being something that no rational human would have any great reason to doubt. Even the best reporter in the world wouldn't look at that and say "This SEEMS legit, but this COULD just be the work of an eccentric millionaire recreating a perfect copy of an Olympic dormitory and then asking an Olympian to tweet it out just to fool me!"

Anaxagoras - 2014-02-23

To summarize my post above: his point is that the media acted like a bunch of fucking parrots. Their job is to do more than just repeat "clever" puns.

infinite zest - 2014-02-23

Wait.. what's the big deal? It's a fucking DOG of some kind. Looks like a wolf. I'd probably have the same reaction.

infinite zest - 2014-02-23

Oh. Looked it up. That wasn't so hard, was it?

Bort - 2014-02-23

Just you wait, when a wolf REALLY comes down her hallway nobody will believe her.

MurgatroidMendelbaum - 2014-02-23

Bort,

Please accept this IOU good for Five Stars.

TeenerTot - 2014-02-24

I'm so angry and disappointed in the media lately that I think they deserve any trolling they get.
Hey, media: "-gate" isn't a real suffix. And I don't need it on a word to understand when something is a scandal. Fuck off. Also, "openly gay" doesn't mean "published his gayness in a periodical of more than 5000 readers." Do I need to take out an informative ad in my local paper to be considered "openly" hetero?? FUCK OFF.

Sorry.

Bort - 2014-02-24

I just realized what this hoax needed: some very simple puzzle to unravel that would expose this as a deliberate hoax, to see if anyone would do a minimal amount of journalism.

Columnist Bob Harris tells of one time was watching CNN during the Kosovo War, when the big news was that a few American soldiers had been captured by Yugoslavian forces. As a visual, CNN was playing a Yugoslav video of the soldiers, while the CNN talking heads were saying that there was no word on the identity of the soldiers. But anyone with any familiarity with Cyrillic characters could see the names of the soldiers right there on the screen.

So maybe that's what Jimmy should have done -- put a sign across the hall in Cyrillic characters that phonetically said "this is a hoax, do your job media" or "If you can read this you probably aren't CNN".
