Meh, if you dont like your OS or GUI you can use whatever linux combination or kernel and windows manager you want or make your own distro or just make your own whole original OS if you *really* want to.
Computing has never been so cool!

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-02-23

*of not "or"

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-02-23

Also theres tonnes of programs available that do exactly what this guy wants for instance the famous emacs.
Maybe this stuff is not mainstream but the mainstream stuff that sells is always gonna be dumbed down shit in any arena.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2014-02-23

Eg, the popular smartphone OSs Android and iOS. Theyre fucking godawful messes but they sell like hotcakes. Who cares if most people go for inferior crap.

Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23

Those are still basically the same GUI paradigm and Linux is a wasteland for serious audio work unfortunately, although that's improving. At least it can handle real time audio now, but there still isn't much good software.

You know that ableton on Mac is actually just running in wine right? You can potentially get better performance running something in wine on linux than using genuine windows .net.
Also linux has got really cool asio drivers with way more options / better performance than windows.

Caminante Nocturno - 2014-02-23

I guess he survived getting shot by that security guard.

StanleyPain - 2014-02-23

Too bad about his astronaut friend, though.

infinite zest - 2014-02-23

I worked (briefly) for Xerox and we'd get people like this guy on the phone all the time. I'd just sit there and listen. I might have actually talked to this guy.

StanleyPain - 2014-02-23

Someone should introduce this guy to TempleOS.

sosage - 2014-02-23

The point isn't that the guy is looking for a solution and "should just use this" or "just go do that". He's informing us on how the GUI standards that were sold to consumers were actually a regression of what computing could do (which I found interesting).

It's still full of bitter overtones, but I mean...it's computer science. Tearing down other people's work while being snarky seems to be a prerequisite of that career path. It can only eventually manifest into bitter rants about what could've, should've, would've when you get older.

infinite zest - 2014-02-24

I can relate, a little.. I was a movie projectionist and once things went digital and I moved, it took me a while to find something new, like I was obsolete. I'm still proud of my knowledge but it still pisses me off because it took me a long time to perfect. It's like a sushi master when they decide that all fish is contaminated by Fukushima and there's an easy tastes-like-fish replacement that's already cut to perfection..

Enjoy - 2014-02-23

"How dare they make cut-and-paste simple!"

infinite zest - 2014-02-24

He's like the "back in my day" grandpa for computers.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-24

Steve Jobs made Xerox pay for the privilege of letting him steal their idea. I know Jobs was hands-down the worst scumbag asshole in the entire history of computing, but that's low even for him.

I have this awful, awful feeling that this will be me in forty years time, sitting in an abandoned church, bitching about Google and how mobile devices and Cloud schemes ruined computing. And I will be right, but it will be small condolence.
