Heh, not bad.

Seriously though, there's no microtransactions to be seen, right? I was going to snag this next check.

chairsforcheap - 2014-03-12

no it doesn't. I'm also snagging it next check.

Also picking it up release day. I haven't paid for full for a game since....I forget.

All I'm hoping for is improved multiplayer mechanics. I loved the idea of the invasion/co-op thing, but matching people purely by soul level while ignoring gear (where the vast majority of a player's power came from) was dumb.

They also should have opened up invasion options WAY sooner. Gravelord and Darkmoon were impossible to find without a FAQ, and they're matchmaking mechanic almost never worked. The red soapsign and darkwraith didn't come along until the end game. So that left Forest Hunter as the only early, easy to find PVP covenant but its "anything goes" setup meant it was overrun with catass gank farmers.

And fuck Wrath of the Gods and dark magic spells. Hard.

snagging it next check tag???

I watched the Giant Bomb videos of it and it seems like it's significantly harder in some areas, but less vague about a lot of other things.
I dunno..as much as I respect what From is doing with the Souls series, I kind of miss the slower, more creepy and oppressive atmosphere of the King's Field games. I understand why they moved away from first-person, but I still kinda had hoped they'd make something more directly connected to those.

You know, you say that...but have you played them again since they were new? Kings Field 2 was my first game with my first PSX and I recall the gloomy atmosphere and dire dialogue impressing me, but then the abject misery of everything else about it defeating me utterly. I recently emulated it again, for old times sake and it really doesn't hold up on any level, except that it still makes me want to kill myself.

Besides, if you think the souls games are fast paced, it's only be comparison to the glacial pace of Kings Field. They are actually quite slow, patient and methodical games by today's standards. Honestly, by any eras standards.

I played Demon's souls it seemed alright with the exception of the intentionally awful control scheme. I was actually told by somebody that Demon's souls controls were "better" than those in dark souls.

It's not for everyone, but I will say that a lot of people learn to like it on a second attempt. I didn't get it the first time I played it. I got 10 hours in and quit because I was bored. a year later, I started again and adored it. But again, not everyone will dig it and it's totally valid to not like these games.
