I'm skipping around but this doesn't seem very good.

King of Kong covered Donkey Kong, a game ingrained in pop culture, and they still took some time to explain the premise and just how OCD the guy's approach to mastering it was. You know a plumber jumps over barrels, and they show Steve charting out every possible path with a grease pencil. It's crazy and fascinating.

Here you have DotA, which less than 1% of the population would be familiar with, and they don't explain a damn thing. I've sadly played hundreds (possibly thousands) of hours of these games, and even I have no clue what the players are doing. "They treat practice like a day job." What do they? How do they practice? How extreme do they get? Who knows! They barely show any of the actual game. When they do show some footage, they keep trying to get fancy with zooms (to the point you can't see the action), camera angle shifts, and cutting to pre-rendered cutscenes, which is like explaining a football play by focusing on the airborne ball the whole time. "This dude initiated and everyone followed him," followed by totally unrelated footage that illustrates nothing (never mind that they never explain what initiating even means).

You can argue that the documentary is about the human element and not the game, but King of Kong did a fantastic job on both. Even in a game as complex as DotA, they could have easily illustrated a single play to showcase the ridiculous amount of practice that went into a team being that coordinated.

Nobody unfamiliar with DotA is going to have a damn clue about what's going on. Nobody familiar with it is going to find it interesting because they never get into the game. This feels like if someone made a documentary on drug addiction without ever showing any of the subjects tripping.

Maybe you skipped around thus why it was confusing? Good writeup though.

I skipped around to the parts that showed the actual game, which was pretty rare! Nowhere there did they ever explain what was going on, why it was amazing or why you should care. If they ever explain how they approach the game, they did it deep in the parts that don't show the game!

Every non-game part just seemed to be, "I'm worried they're spending so much time on a video game they might not get paid anything for," or, "I'm nervous."

Hoop Dreams this aint.

It's not even so much that they don't go into such huge detail on the game, but that they don't provide any information AT ALL. They don't even tell you what the goal of the game is! Then they constantly use bits of the players talking logo without explaining the logo ("push", "initiate", "teamfight", "Roshan"). Imagine watching the kill screen scene in King of Kong if they never explained what a kill screen was, and then instead of showing the kill screen they kept zooming to Matrix bullet time spins of Mario jumping over a barrel.

lingo, not logo. Jesus I'm tired.

Fans ruin things and should never attempt to make things.

I am so sick of Dota. It's like how I felt about WoW and internet poker at their height, I wasn't interested but it seems to be goddamn everywhere. I have a friend, my oldest childhood friend, in fact, that has over the years spent his life on StarCraft, Dota, Poker and Wow. He is in his 30's now, an angry and depressed guy still hammering away at this shit. He recently disowned me about a year ago over getting a logic puzzle I thought he'd like wrong and thus he figured I rigged it to embarrass him and lord some bullshit over him, but cause in his mind life is nothing but competition. I don't blame games like this for such behavior, he obviously had other issues in life, but they are symptomatic of folks with these hugely anti-social tendencies. To me personally, they represent the loss of my oldest friend, and thus I kind of hate them and can't wait until they die out in popularity so I don't have to have the reminder of loss.

I'll jump in again and say I am also a guy in his 30's that plays video games,so I'm not trying to judge anyone for their hobbies, I just mean that I think anything an be pushed to an unhealthy degree, anything can be addictive. Dota deserves to exist, I'm sure it's a fine game, I just hate it for personal reasons.

I get the feeling this was made to be a PR fluff piece to erase that stigma, and not a reflective documentary.

Meerkat - 2014-03-25

I knew lots of guys back in the Quake and Quake 2 days who spent all their time playing in Clans and ended up flunking out of University / College and then everyone started playing something else and they ended up with nothing.

RocketBlender - 2014-03-26

For what it's worth, at least DoTa isn't League of Legends. That game has the biggest community of insane assholes you can possibly imagine.

Nominal - 2014-03-26

Give it time. LoL wasn't that bad in the beginning either. It took a year or two for it to get full of nothing but assholes.

Every DotA type game I try is always fairly asshole free in the beginning since no one really knows what they're doing. Once people get an idea of what "being pro" means, that's when they turn into quarterbacking assholes.

So why is this PR commercial such a lie? The asshole-ness in LoL didn't really take off until they began the seasonal championship and streaming it on Twitch. THAT'S when everyone decided that only they knew how to play and everyone else was an idiot. This whole production is just to show how totally awesome DotA 2 is, and all your fears of living a stunted life practicing video games all day are unfounded because esports are the wave of the future and it'll all work out in the end.

I give DotA 2 inside of 6 months before the assholes take over. it's just too similar to the rest of the genre where one bad player disproportionally affects a team.

StanleyPain - 2014-03-25

They should have named the documentary "Pay To Win." MOBAs are basically the "Magic The Gathering" of computer games, now.

yourmother - 2014-03-25

Actually in DOTA, the only paid content is aesthetic.

Nominal - 2014-03-25

Uhhh, yeah. There isn't a single real money sale in any DotA game right now that gives an in game boost. Where in the world did you get that from?

Sudan no1 - 2014-03-25

there are a ton of things wrong with the MOBA formula, but pay-to-win is really not one of them.

TheSupafly - 2014-03-25

The 2nd guy's name being I-shut-in has to be a joke.

misterbuns - 2014-03-25

Garbage.

not sure how to rate a giant commercial.

Nominal - 2014-03-25

Pretty much
