The one at the end is how I've always imagined them. If I can't wear socks on my front porch without them getting filthy, how could something big and slimy make it through a dungeon without collecting all that grit?

Actually, that would be a fun backstory. Some wizard summons a gelatinous cube just to tidy the place up a bit and it gets a little out of hand.
