I'll five-star it for Stanislaw Lem being one of the early sci-fi "greats," BUT...
I couldn't read his stuff with a gallon of Adderall and a caffeine drip. I tried several times to give his Lensman series a try (based on recommendations from others), but he seems to be one of those authors that you can only slog through if you have a taste (immunity?) for dense, info-dump prose with not a whole lot of stuff happening. It's like Tolkien, but sci-fi.

Merzbau - 2014-04-27 Lensman isn't Lem, though, it's Doc Smith. If you haven't tried any Lem yet, he has some brilliant short-story collections that move quickly (Cyberiad and Mortal Engines, which includes the story Maska is based on), some Borges-esque work (my personal favorite, including Imaginary Magnitude and A Perfect Vacuum) and maybe his best-regarded novel, The Futurological Congress. It's good stuff.
