Search out a Cox film called Three Businessmen, a variation of the Three Kings story from the Bible. It's way better than this. I remember trying to watch this a long time ago and it just exuded mismanagement and drug abuse.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-02

"mismanagement and drug abuse" is the strongest argument in favor of it.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-01

"The film was not originally intended to be made at all, and the reason for a preponderance of musicians in the cast was the result of a concert tour of Nicaragua that was planned in the first place.[4] Political problems arose concerning the support of the left-wing government of Nicaragua, and the tour was cancelled. In its place Cox decided to have the bands, and several actors he could assemble, make a movie in Almera, Spain. Cox and co-star Dick Rude wrote a script in three days,[2] and the entire film was shot in just four weeks. Cox wrote the part of Velma specifically for Courtney Love, who had starred in a supporting role in his previous film, Sid and Nancy (1986).[5]

Alex Cox turned down the chance to direct Three Amigos! in order to film Straight to Hell."

infinite zest - 2014-05-01

Haha really? Alex Cox's Three Amigos would have been so cool! Or horrible. Probably both at the same time. That's just Cox for ya. PS I liked Repo Girl.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-01

I'd never heard about that before I submitted this, it would have been pretty amazing.

infinite zest - 2014-05-02

I never liked Three Amigos that much, even when I was a kid. But my dad would rent a combination of Buckaroo Banzai and Repo Man for me, and anything with Donald Plesance in it so those were the only movies I wanted to watch.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-02

I think if I had to choose favorite 5th grade movies it would be a toss up between Spaceballs, Three Amigos and Aliens.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-02

I did like Repo Man but I only saw it once or twice before high school.

infinite zest - 2014-05-02

It's in the hopper but check out Walker, if y'all haven't already. It's my favorite Alex Cox movie. So many wonderful anachronisms and a soundtrack by Joe Strummer and Zander Schloss. I never thought about it but it was kind of his Three Amigos. I loved Spaceballs and Three Amigos, don't get me wrong, but for one reason or another I found Cox's movies to be much more humorous with tragedy at the gates. I dunno. Beautiful movie.

Billy the Poet - 2014-05-01

Straight to Hell is great and if you don't like it you're stupid.

infinite zest - 2014-05-01

For me it's in the same category of Jarmusch's Mystery Train. If you're looking for Stranger Than Paradise, you'll leave disappointed. If you're looking for Repo Man here, you'll leave disappointed. It's not my favorite movie or anything, but it's just plain fun from beginning to end.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-01

I've actually seen it more times than I've seen Repo Man, I think.

infinite zest - 2014-05-01

Ain't this just the definition of weird. My housemate decided to purge his VHS collection, which is sad because it was 3 walls of VHS, going up 10 feet. I told him not to, but it was his decision.

Anyway, one of the VHSs was labeled Alphaville, which is also a good movie, but it was Straight to Hell. I was just thinking about how much I missed it this morning. Alex Cox tried to hit on my ex girlfriend at a bar once too, but that's a different story.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-01

Alphaville's good? For some reason it never looked good to me but it's been so long I forget why. Probably just the box or something.

infinite zest - 2014-05-02

Yeah. It's Godard so it's got that going for it, for better or worse. Maybe it was the kids I was hanging out with, but I kind of went the Alex Cox/Takeshi Miike route over french new wave. Kind of a pretentious spoof of noir movies but in the future, which in a way set a precedence for cyberpunk when you think about it. Rick Deckard and Lemmy Caution actually have a lot in common. Weird. Anyway, good movie.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-02

I never got in to French New Wave much, either. I was also confusing Alphaville with some crappy 90s movie (or possibly Smallville) in my previous post, so disregard it.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-02

I was a Pasolini guy.

Lurchi - 2014-05-01

This movie would have been better if it didn't suck.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-01

That post would have been better if it didn't suck.

infinite zest - 2014-05-02

The movie's polarizing as shit. I liken it to Linklater (likenlator lolz) around Slacker. Nobody really LIKES Slacker. Straight to Hell had a similar vibe. for be at least. A philosophical western journey with an annoying-as-fuck Courtney Love and a bunch of my favorite punk musicians who can't act to save their lives. And it's so fucking awesome.

If you're expecting a coherent story set in a western atmosphere, go rent Good Bad and the Ugly.

Old_Zircon - 2014-05-02

I just saw an opportunity for a sweet, sweet burn and couldn't pass it up. I totally see why people would hate this movie even though I love it. It's a billion times better than Sid and Nancy though, surely we can agree on that.

Scrimmjob - 2014-05-02

I've never made it more than 15 minutes into this turd(I've tried at least twice).

Also Joe Strummer can suck my black dick.

infinite zest - 2014-05-02

I'd really like to see an actual Return to Hell.. there was a director's cut called Straight to Hell Returns which I haven't seen.

infinite zest - 2014-05-02

scrimmjob you're black? Man I had no idea. Sorry for everything.
