Oh my god Werner Herzog IS in it. I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed to see this movie. Of course I'll be watching it under the subjectivity of having listened to the Comedy Bang Bang bit. This was supposed to sort of be a comedy anyway though, right? At least on the level of "comedy" that every recent Paul Verhoven film was pretty funny (except Black Book?)

I'm a drifter with nothing to lose. I mean to beat you to death and drink your blood from a boot.

It's fucking bonkers from start to finish. I think the whole reason this exists is that one day, Tom Cruise decided to make the kind of movie Tom Cruise wanted to see. So we got Tom Cruise: Asperger's OT VIII P.I. Jack Reacher is a high-functioning autistic who instead of fixating on dinosaurs or trains, has an obsessive interest in kicking ass and solving mysteries.

By 3 minutes in, the people on screen have said the name 'Jack Reacher' 200 times, just in case you forgot what movie you had just paid to see. Chris McQuarrie got screenwriting credit, but I have suspicions that Tom Cruise brought his own script to the shoot on day one and everyone just said "fuck it, he's the boss. I guess we're making that movie instead".

It's based on a long running series of books by Lee Child, one of those hack authors who puts out a book every month (likely ghostwritten). When the movie came out I had an endless stream of customers telling me how absolutely wrong the movie is, for whatever that's worth.

I think nearly every Tom Cruise movie, with the exception of Tropic Thunder and Magnolia, is the movie Tom Cruise wants to see. A friend of a friend of mine was an extra in Mission Impossible 3. There was a helicopter scene that day and he walks up to her, who wasn't in that scene at all, and just says "I love Helicopters." Smiles, and continues to stand there for about a minute in complete silence.

I have a lot of respect for Tom Cruise. He insisted in doing his own stunts in Ghost Protocol (DIRECTED BY BRAD BIRD ALL YOU TOM CRUISE HATERS GREAT MOVIE), including the Burj Dubai scene (not really a spoiler since it's every trailer.) I'm sure it was a burden on the crew, as I doubt if he's much more than any Mazamas card carrier as far as climbing goes, but still!

IZ, I like a good Tom Cruise flick as much as the rest of 'murrica. As for the man, A buddy of mine worked on one of his movie (and dealt with him regularly). He reports that Mr. Cruise is intense, but otherwise a perfect gentleman. I just don't understand how they were able to make a movie where Tom Cruise, one of the most charismatic motherfuckers alive today, is completely devoid of his trademark charm. Great action set pieces, but a ponderous flick. I have strong opinions re: Jack Reacher.

Yeah I wasn't implying that he was being creepy.. it was just kind of awkward. Johnny Depp was eating at a restaurant where my friend worked and it was the same sort of thing. You're almost trained to ignore who they are. In my friend of a friend's case, it was probably an "I'm Tom Cruise just waiting for a 'yeah they are cool' response. In Mr. Depp's case, he had good service and tipped her like a thousand dollars.

I'll have to see this whole movie to make a judgement call. Much like Bad Lieutenant Port of Call NOLA I haven't gotten around to it, despite my love for Herzog. Seems like one of those great movies to watch with a few friends and a couple of pints of beer, kinda like Die Hard 4 or Transfoermers. Or MI:3 where we drank an entire bottle of vodka in the theatre and forgot how to get home on the bus. Oh college.

Also it's been driving me nuts: I know Jack Reacher is a character in a Stephen King book too but I can't remember which one. Somewhere in the Dark Tower?

Riskbreaker - 2014-05-19

What the hell is Herzog doing there? I guess he needs money for a new film.

Gmork - 2014-05-19

I feel icky when I like a movie Tom Cruise is in. Parts of it, anyways.

Callamon - 2014-05-19

Is this set in the past or is there supposed to still be a pay phone somewhere ?

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-05-19

Glad I'm not the only one. Tom Cruise? Fortress Phone? Is it 1985?

Vaidency - 2014-05-19

It's a good thing he had enough quarters to call back twice.

TheOtherCapnS - 2014-05-19

Someone should make a sound edit of this movie where he just has a big sloshing pocket full of change every time he takes a step.

They're still around. I kind of really like to make love in a phone booth. Like in True Romance. Closest thing I've got to a turn-on so laugh if you want but there you go. The phone booth I thought existed by my house was gone, so we had to bike all around town to find one and we did.

Gmork - 2014-05-19

IZ I see your phone booth and raise you "in a mcdonalds playplace after its closed, almost getting caught by security"

Save the Girl, Mario! Watch out for the flaming barrels.

In March, I was hanging out with my girlfriend who at 28 still lived with her parents - so we were all hanging out - and things were morose because of a death in the family, and the self-prescription was to watch as much shit as possible to numb the pain (I guess). And this particular night, our choice seemed to be between "Jack Reacher" and the remake of "The Italian Job." Although my testicles tortioned at the notion of either, I was for Jack Reacher. "The Italian Job" was ultimately selected.

We aren't together anymore.
