That's pretty much how it's done these days. Except without reel-to-reel tapes. And talent.

Innocent Bystander - 2014-06-11

Oh man that is SO true. There hasn't been any good music made after... I dunno, 1996?

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-11

There's a whole lot of good music happening now, it's just that nobody cares (in the US anyway) so you don't hear about it as easily.

Innocent Bystander - 2014-06-11

I was actually being sarcastic.

Cube - 2014-06-11

And I was being what ever MAD Magazine used to be towards movies and TV shows. Playfully belittling, in a roast-y sort of way.

Dang it, in't anyone on this dang site serious!

Needs Vocoder tag, and why cocaine? More Bounce To The Ounce was the first I heard from Zapp, then Grapevine, and what I thought was a great ballad, Be All Right, more soul and less funk.

Obligatory Roger Troutman Fan Comment:

It's a talkbox, not a vocoder.

Old_Zircon - 2014-06-11

BOOMER HOW COULD YOU?

Boomer The Dog - 2014-06-12

Thanks for correcting me on that, and here I've gone on the radio and barked that it's a vocoder too. I heard Roger being interviewed on the local radio station and it sounded like he was pushing keys. Aerosmith had something like a talk box, though I think that was fed with the guitar sound.

I know Zircon, how do I fail to mention something Dog related in my post!

Okay then, I'd like to hear what a Dog bark sounds like through a talk box.

MUCH BETTER

How to lay it down

Harveyjames - 2014-06-11

This song they're recording is a tribute to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar funded by the NBA, and as far as I could tell Roger didn't use any of Ray Davies' parts in the final mix.

Boomer The Dog - 2014-06-12

After watching I wanted to hear the completed song, and all I could find was what you mentioned, without the vocals they were working on, but maybe there's a single of it? The copy I heard had a long spoken intro thanking 'Cream Abdul-Jabbar', and I wish they'd kept Roger's vocals in it.

Since I heard lots of Roger as a younger pup, and it was cool because it was loaded with talkbox, I can't be as much of a critic of autotune.
