I remember seeing this guy when I was a kid at the Children's Emporium at the Minnesota State Fair back in 1988, along with a guy who called himself "The Carfoonist" (who I actually was a bit of a pen-pal with back when I wanted to be a cartoonist).

I don't think I like this regeneration of Wonka; his companions seem a little shitty too.

This guy is now a much sought after warm-up comedian for sitcom audiences. The other video I posted as an article with his story, and it's fascinating. He played Wonka for twenty years, had a TV kiddie show, did a bunch of sleazy "how to pick up chicks with magic tricks" videos, and seems like a cool guy.
But the thing I notice is that Johnny Depp definitely took his characterization in the Tim Burton remake from this guy. He's got a weird, lounge act way of talking that I just find creepy.

Wonka's wedding ring's kind of breaking the illusion for me
|
BiggerJ - 2014-06-16 He successfully temporarily isolated the concept of candy and married it. Fickelgruber forever regretted asking the question that began, "If you like candy so much..."

Bort - 2014-06-16 Yeah, it's like in the host segment of "Horror of Party Beach" where the Roman lady describes Mike Nelson as "average", and he goes into ladies' man mode, while wearing a wedding ring. Granted, he's actually married to the Roman lady in real life, but it still weirds me.
... Just imagine Mike Nelson as the Willy Wonka magician guy. I feel like we've been deprived of something special.
