He kinda blows up his own argument in the last minute or so...

EvilHomer - 2014-06-20

So what exactly does this new streaming agreement entail? It's a vitally important detail, but man with a beard leaves it out.

SolRo - 2014-06-20

YouTube/Google will block/remove any indie music labels channel that hasn't signed up for YouTube/googles new music streaming service.

And obviously the 'don't be evil' corporation is offering indies a shit deal in terms of royalties

EvilHomer - 2014-06-20

Oh, OK. So they're offering a new paid service, and telling indie bands further participation in their regular, "free" video service is contingent upon the indie bands enrolling in this premium streaming service? Is that correct? That's pretty fucked up, even for Google.

Will this effect ALL music on Youtube, or only bands signed to indie labels? That is, if I were to self-produce some music in my own bedroom, would I be obliged to sign this streaming agreement? Or is it only for professional bands signed to established, but small, record labels? I've been thinking of putting some stuff up on Youtube, but if this effects hobbyists as well as indie bands, then forget it.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-20

Also, followup question: is it possible that this is Google "testing the waters" for their own versions of tiered internet service? Google has been pretty staunch in fighting against the repeal of Net Neutrality, but, as with Google's attitudes towards China, privacy, and SOPA, I suspect that their commitment to The Fight is more about preserving their own corporate self-interest than about preserving the underlying principles of a free, open internet. I don't doubt that if Google can find ways to unfairly monetize basic services at the end-users' expense, they will do so without hesitation; they simply don't want telecoms or government agencies to beat them to the punch.

SolRo - 2014-06-20

Probably only indie lables. Shaking down individual small-time musicians isn't profitable enough.

memedumpster - 2014-06-20

Here is the Forbes article on it.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2014/06/18/youtube-is -about-to-delete-independent-artists-from-its-site/

memedumpster - 2014-06-20

The comments on that article are great, because they are the predictable "everyone just use a different site" argument. This would not only work, but actually injure Google, but it wont happen. Google knows that half the indie artists will sign on to screw the other half and give them more money. Google is twice as cynical as I am at any given time, which is why it's search results are all "fuck what you want buy something or leave."

memedumpster - 2014-06-20

its* stupid article had same spelling error

fluffy - 2014-06-20

Meanwhile they convinced me to list all my music on Google Play Store to get OH SO MUCH income and special listings and so on.

I have made, I shit you not, 1 cent.

Over the last two years.

oddeye - 2014-06-21

I'll make the obvious joke: "Maybe your music is complete shit!!"

Never heard it myself.

EvilHomer - 2014-06-21

>>"Maybe your music is complete shit!!"

It's almost as bad as Bowie!

I more just fuck around on my keyboard than make actual "songs" songs. I'm too anti-social to join a band, too lazy to produce everything myself, and at any rate, setting out to make "a song" just sounds like way too much commitment. Still, I've been meaning to do some recordings, strictly for fun. The old folks at the VA seem to like my baroque interpretations of Pantera and Slayer, so maybe internet people would too?

EvilHomer - 2014-06-21

Oh, fluffy's stuff! Nevermind.

Do you have a link?

Spaceman Africa - 2014-06-20

If it affects 73Q that further affects the 4 people who go on it.

Scrimmjob - 2014-06-20

It would definitely make 73q more useless than it already is. Oh well!

fedex - 2014-06-20

As one of the four, I will say that I regularly find new music I deeply enjoy, thanks to two if the other three

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-06-20

I don't post enough on it, but I always check it anyway. You guys are philistines.

baleen - 2014-06-21

Half of 73q's links are broken as it is.

memedumpster - 2014-06-21

I used to browse 73Q by hitting random. Half the links were dead, but I'd usually find something cool eventually. Since poe migrated servers, random no longer works more than once, so I stopped going. It was all about the discovery of music I'd never willingly know to click on otherwise.
