I don't care about those dogs. And as long as bad stuff continues to happen to human beings worldwide, I will continue to opt out of America's increasingly mawkish obsession with certain animals. There are children dying of malnutrition and preventable disease all around the world, and the richest country on the planet steers an increasing percentage of its wealth and charitable donations towards various quadrupeds.
I know plenty of people who are proud of the fact that they'd choose their pet's life over that of a stranger. Something is deeply wrong here, and it seems to be a weird blend of Victorian-style sentimentality and queasy New Age relativism.
