Educational campaigns about how terrible these are may be the only way to defeat them, as Texas and others show how impotent government is to help. Then again, maybe something on the Federal level could get done... haha just kidding.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2014-08-11

As if the government doesn't want to perpetuate debt. As if they were smart enough to avoid the catastrophic debt spiral to begin with.

fluffy - 2014-08-12

Because government education programs have done so well to prevent obesity, smoking, drug use, teenage pregnancy, and Republicans.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-08-12

There aren't really very effective educational programs for any of those things though, at least not uniformly.

SolRo - 2014-08-11

Modern capitalism? Unlike nice old timey capitalism that caused the great depression, child labor, sweat shops, etc?

BorrowedSolution - 2014-08-11

That sounds like modern capitalism to me, SolRo.

SolRo - 2014-08-11

What's 'not modern' capitalism?

is the video description meant as "capitalism was good back in the day", or are old and new capitalisms terrible but in different ways?

Hooker - 2014-08-11

SolRo _is_ correct. It didn't actually take long after capitalism touched down for the more intelligent of our species to mull it over in their heads and say, "wait a minute, this is fucking bullshit."

BorrowedSolution - 2014-08-12

Tell that to the 'developing' world, Hooker.

Hooker - 2014-08-12

I don't know what that means.

SolRo - 2014-08-12

and I still want to know what the hell 'old' capitalism is.

"The pound of flesh which I demand of him
Is dearly bought. Tis mine, and I will have it."

- Some Fucking Jew

BorrowedSolution - 2014-08-11

John Oliver is very good at this.

Jet Bin Fever - 2014-08-12

He's goddamn amazing at it.

memedumpster - 2014-08-11

This kind of practice started thousands of years ago with Mangy Pelt Advance.

Needs "I call dingo" tag.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-08-11

How do people do this?

Seriously, how do the assholes who do this sort of thing live every moment of every day knowing what they do to people?

How can they take money from people with real jobs doing real things like scrubbing floors or flipping burgers and feel they are superior to those people?

Is it just total lack of conscience or empathy? Is this really a serious mental disorder we should be trying to cure?

SolRo - 2014-08-11

Layers of separation.

They only see, and care about, the money they make.

Kieran27 - 2014-08-11

"Nobody is forcing them to take out a loan, and hey, it is an essential service for some. And if it is so essential, doesn't that make me a hero?"

- payday loan PR agent

SolRo - 2014-08-11

that's still one of the layer dregs. they interact with the unwashed filth at some level, requiring self-delusion like the above.

Crab Mentality - 2014-08-11

Sociopathy. I'd be tempted to just say "ME!" for username/comment synergy, but that doesn't fit with this.

sosage - 2014-08-11

Every time we explore this topic, it seems to come down to a couple things.

1) Some of these people have an unhealthy obsession with obtaining wealth. Sometimes its a good old fashioned hoarding problem. Sometimes its their lunatic competitive drive to own/make more than the person above them, even if we're talking salaries in the millions of dollars.

2) The people who own and run these things, and most large companies, are genuinely psychotic. They got where they are because they lack empathy. Supposedly, studies exist that prove this. POETV has at least one documentary on the subject in its archives. I mean, I can't imagine someone charging over 50% for a loan having the ability to feel guilt for the screwing they are giving, let alone 100%...200%...500%.

3) We allow these organizations to get away with a lot of bullshit. Allowing a corporation to be seen and have the same rights as an individual is just the tip of the shitburg. Having an industry's paid goons occupy a government committee that regulates said industry seems so common place now days, that I...I'm just too angry to finish this sentence. It's just fucking common, okay?

SolRo - 2014-08-12

sosage you're missing a large segment of them.

They didn't get to where they are by backstabbing, cheating, being terrible, or whatever. They were just born into money.

And there's nothing in the world that produces sheltered retards better than extreme wealth (lead paint isn't even close).

TheOtherCapnS - 2014-08-12

My brother works in retail, and was getting vigorously recruited by a large payday advance chain. They were offering him 0k as his base salary. He told them to fuck off, but I would imagine that people who do this are just really unscrupulous, and don't give a fuck about much besides themselves.
