This sort of shit annoys me because the joke is so obnoxiously specific it feels more like a smug shout-out to other physics nerds than an actual prank. Yes, I get it: There is no magical unlimited free energy device. But beyond that the specific requirements give this an air of SNORT CAN YOU BELIEVE THE PLEEBS THAT WOULD USE NEODYNE MAGNETS FOR THIS THING???? There's no build-up, no payoff, no moment where any intelligent person sees through the facade. It's just unfunny all around.

total troll saturation of the internet also makes it impossible to tell if anyone really fell for it.

The king of this sort of foolishness is a fellow by the name of Daniel Pomerleau. Couldn't find any clips showing the guy in action, but here's the skinny.

He's a Canadian Sperg, so you know he's doubly magikal! Same gimmick as shown in the clip. If you poke around the web you'll find a lot of people seem to believe this. That i don't find shocking. Rather, it's that the same people when shown a real something will often be very skeptical and reject the thing. That is to say, an impossible thing is much more readily believed than a possible thing.

The "piggy tail" really sells it.

fluffy - 2014-08-20

So where are the batteries hidden while he's giving the demonstration?

glasseye - 2014-08-20

It's most likely induced from a wire beneath the table.

RabbitMountain - 2014-08-20

induced current is always AC. That's why ferric core transformers need AC to work.

These are just two coin batteries hidden somewhere

That dude has the most punchable voice ever, but great reveal about where the batteries were hidden in his particular version.

Oscar Wildcat - 2014-08-21

If you think a battery is small, check out modern diodes. Not that they would even be necessary to light a bulb as shown.

That said, one of the magnets shown has two suspicious spots that look like glue delaminations but could be where the batteries are.
