So in a month, Sanders has been in favour of attacking Gaza and ISIS.

There are no good politicians.

Void 71 - 2014-09-12

A lot of otherwise sane jewish leftists lose their shit when they start talking about the middle east. Sanders is just another name to add to that list.

ISIS is real, in the way Saddam Hussein's WMD threat wasn't. While I don't think ISIS poses a threat to us, they most definitely pose a threat to the locals in Iraq, and especially marginalized groups like the Yazidi.

Intervention isn't always a virtue, but the same is true of non-intervention.

What happens when a senator starts seriously considering running for president, the crazy sets in.

And the Kurds that the US is tripping over itself to arm are starting to ethnically cleanse that region of sunni civilians.

And it's 2004 all over again! woo!

Bort - 2014-09-12

SolRo, got a link for that? I'm looking around and, unsurprisingly enough, I'm finding tons of links about ISIL / ISIS / ODIN / whatever ethnically cleansing, but nothing about Kurds doing the same.

SolRo - 2014-09-13

NPR was covering it, and google is fucking useless for finding anything specific anymore...why yes google, I need to see the 30 OTHER blogs republishing the same AP story I don't need in the first place.

It's not only stupid and arrogant to think you can use military force to positively change a country: it's a pretty fucked up idea in the first place. We have to keep in mind these invasions aren't because our government gives a shit about innocent people. These are strategic decisions. If the government gave a shit about innocent people, we'd have been in Africa numerous times to prevent genocide. Don't forget there's oil in Iraq, it's near Israel, and near our other Gulf courtiers.

I also think it's funny that Sanders didn't even refute the "tough guy" method/image. I guess you could chalk it up to him just having a couple of minutes on TV, but it's probably just the fact that Liberals are actually about as hawkish as most conservatives on foreign policy, they're just a little smarter.

"It's not only stupid and arrogant to think you can use military force to positively change a country"

Tell that to Germany. No, you can't use military solutions to solve every problem, but when you've got a genocidal bunch of fuckheads swarming over a country, perhaps countering their military forces with our military forces (or someone's forces, anyway) is not necessarily a crazy idea.
