My thoughts exactly, IZ.

Vineland would have been a much better point of departure for film.

It's looking like his last great novel will be Against the Day, unless fate intercedes somehow.

fedex - 2014-10-01

yeah to Vineland, my favorite book. Just look at my license plate

yogarfield - 2014-10-01

I never read Vineland. Sell the book in 140 characters or less.

Also 5 for fedex doxing him/herself in late 2014. Those are some huge balls/oves.

That guy - 2014-10-01

fedex, I'm at the front door, can you let me in?

fedex - 2014-10-01

eh, I dont care at this point

fedex - 2014-10-01

That guy - 2014-10-01

@yogarfield :

Vineland: Doomed counterculture heroes reenact The Fall, professional Karmic readjustment required. Magical realism and Film at 11.

yogarfield - 2014-10-02

Ghost gassy masses for everybody.

yogarfield - 2014-10-01

Fuck's sake, at least start with The Crying of Lot 49. That might be doable.

That guy - 2014-10-01

I don't care where this book sits among Pynchon novels. It's a PT Anderson movie, and it's going to be fucking awesome.

infinite zest - 2014-10-01

You're probably right. I remember reading it and thinking "this would be a pretty good movie," and No Country for Old Men is arguably a better movie than the novel because it was in the right hands. I haven't seen The Master yet, but so far Anderson hasn't let me down so I'll still see it. It's kind of like David Foster Wallace: Broom of the System wasn't his best work but it would work in a way that Infinite Jest will (hopefully) never work. Same with Wonderboys: pretty great movie. Kavalier and Clay? Production hell infinity (hopefully) forever. Looks like technically there was a film called Imoplex loosely based off Gravity's Rainbow that came out in 2011 though, so I guess this isn't technically the first one.

That guy - 2014-10-01

homeslice, The Master is a great movie, but in a way that demands engagement. It's not as much for funsies as this will be or Boogie Nights was.
If you're on 54evil, pm me after you see it.

infinite zest - 2014-10-01

Will do. I think my favorite Anderson film is Punch Drunk Love, a movie I didn't see right away because of the elephant in the room, who gave an AMAZING performance. Pynchon's "worst" by the way is sort of like saying Murakami's "worst." For me his is Norwegian Wood, but it's still an incredible novel, and the only one that I could really see adapted into a film (which it got, and unfortunately disappointed.) I would've liked to see Lot 49 or Vineland first, but maybe this will inspire those to happen, so we'll end up with More No Country for Old Mens and less The Roads.

That guy - 2014-10-01

Lot 49 would work because it's not so predominantly verbal as to defy translation to dramatics.

Also, Lot 49 would piss off a lot of idiots, which I am for. If I have to live in their world, with their "I hated it because I didn't wish I was one of the characters", at least I get to point and laugh.

I too love Punch Drunk Love even though I hate the elephant. Apparently, PT and the elepahnt are good fucking friends, somehow.

infinite zest - 2014-10-01

Interesting. Maybe they'll work together again. Barry's one of my favorite cinematic characters actually. It was one of those realizations, like growing up on goofy Robin Williams and then seeing him in Good Will Hunting. And Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison will always have a special place in my heart (as will "you like-a-the-juice") but it's a shame to see potential talent go to what looks like 12 years of turds.

That guy - 2014-10-01

Sandler's the kind of star who needs a no-man to tell him what not to do until he figures out what to do. He also needed someone to tell him he's not automatically funny sometime around '97 or so.

boner - 2014-10-02

Watching "The Master" is an ORDEAL. I'd say it was worth it, though. I still give it some thought from time to time. Seeing it in 70mm makes you better than other people, too.

StanleyPain - 2014-10-01

I liked Inherent Vice...it was Pynchon just being Pynchon and fucking around. I kinda like that he's been sorta just doing simple little weird genre novels lately. They don't all have to be Gravity's Rainbow.

That guy - 2014-10-01

...especially since most of the pleasures in most of his novels are so cerebral as to be desert-dry.

Binro the Heretic - 2014-10-01

I've never read any Pynchon, even though people I trust insist I would enjoy it.

I like all these actors and this looks like it will be good.

ShiftlessRastus - 2014-10-01

Eric Roberts wrapped on this movie, left the Warner Brothers lot, and went directly to do voice over for "Lil' Pooter: A Ghost Fart Adventure".

ShiftlessRastus - 2014-10-01

Holy shit! I just checked IMDB and Eric Roberts has 72 projects coming out in the next year! One of them is Human Centipede III !

Hooker - 2014-10-01

I don't think Eric Roberts even rehearses any more. He just shows up, gets paid, and rushes off to the next movie.

Hooker - 2014-10-01

You could call him the hardest working actor in Hollywood, and that would be true, but it would also be profoundly false.

infinite zest - 2014-10-01

I'm not sure if Cool Cat counts as a project.. did anyone ever find out if that was a hoax or not? The whole thing's just so weird to me.

craptacular - 2014-10-01

says this movie, with all its star power, triple-A director, and over the top style, is swiftly forgotten and rarely mentioned among movie fans, movie buffs, or basically anyone.

That guy - 2014-10-02

ok, you're on

infinite zest - 2014-10-02

It's totally off topic but speaking of good movies that everyone seemed to forget about, has anyone seen Snowpiercer? I just caught it last night at a second-run theatre and daaaamn son. Where the hell was it hiding all summer? And I live in a pretty movie buff city, all things considered. No mention from any of my movie buff friends, nothing. I only went because I saw the title on the marquee and I had nothing else to do and it was that or Sin City 2, read the description and was like "oh shit that was the guy who directed The Host" (hands-down one of my all-time favorite movies.) I might have to reconsider my vote for the Counsel as movie of the year now. Anyway, if anyone's still reading this thread, go see Snowpiercer :)

That guy - 2014-10-03

I heard it was good, but maximally arch.

memedumpster - 2014-10-02

This looks great.
